I got a PS2a a while ago for the loop feature and have dug it. If it didn’t have the voicing switches on the front It wouldn’t be nearly as good as some amps really need them. Strangely enough my 20 year old, Marshall Powerbrake sounded good on any amp without that stuff. Only reason I retired it was for the loop feature.

I have the PS2A. Love it. I don't use it as an attenuator, so much as I use it to add low-end chunk via the power amp's depth circuit and a modern attack to amps that lack that kind of thing. Plus the FX loop being after the amp is amazing for time-based effects. As a pure attenuator, it works great too.

Yeah, I particularly liked the depth control that added more thump.
The original also didn't have a great volume taper. A switch was added on the front of the PS-2 for hi/low, and addressed the volume jump issue. Lo mode made it much more friendly, and let you fine-tune whisper volume, if that's what you wanted. I'd definitely recommend the PS-2.

Yeah I remember reading thru that. I have to think alot of these issues are operator error for the most part. As beefy asxWizard thransformers are, hard to imagine one blowing.
I only blew one OT with the Juice Extractor and it was 78 2203 that lost a power tube and took it out.
Lost a few Marshall PT’s over the years. It happens.

Yes. You set the PS' cab output to match the impedance of whatever setup you have (in this case, 16 || 16 ⇒ 8 ohms), and whatever you set your amp to you match with the PS' amp input. It's recommended that you set your amp to match the actual impedance of your speaker setup so that when bypassing the PS you don't get an impedance mismatch, hence setting everything to 8 ohms like you mentioned.

Reading all of it, there's more than 1 that says more than a few have had problems with that TAE unit. Just too much to risk IMO. I remember when it came out, I was definitely considering one with the great sounding demos, and all the features. But I'd rather not risk it myself. The Fryette works great, no need to try anything else.
 
When researching gear i considered the TAE however the few horror stories I read honestly turned me away. Whether they are substantiated or not IDGAF but decided not to take the risk. Wife asked me what I wanted a few Xmass's back and I replied Fryette PS100. Pretty much the best gear I've added in a long time. Functionality is outstanding. I have other attenuator's but the Fryette rep speaks for itself.

If I had one sitting here I would try it, doubt anything happen. Ive done plenty of things over the decades that should have killed my amps and they were never hurt.

Practicing thru a PS etc for two plus hours straight with the amp on 8 and no fan on it…yeah learned my lesson on that. 🔥🔥🔥 😄

For me, I can practice scales, picking exercises non stop for a couple hours at a time. With a loadbox and speaker volume low it is easy for me to forget the amp itself is still cranked. I would never play / practice like that, amp cranked for two plus hours straight into a cabinet. The replacement power transformer was not designed to do that, got too hot and let the smoke out…😄
Now I have a small fan gadget a friend made me that sits on the amp’s top grill. It stays cool now.
