I got a new Peavey 6534+, and had a pair of JJ E34L's I wanted to try in the JVM, with a "49" rating. So, I ordered another pair, and asked for a "49" rating, to have a matched quad for the Peavey. Problem is, I tried them in the Peavey, and even with the bias at it's lowest, it kept climbing, and climbing, to over 46mA, which I know is way too hot! Had I not gotten cold feet, it would have kept going. At 36-38mA, it sounded amazing, but, it wouldn't stabilize, and just kept getting hotter, and hotter.

So, the stupid question is, is this happening because of the hot rating on the tubes? Do I need a colder set?

how long did you let the amp warm up in play position?

if it warmed up for a good 3-5 mins, then i'd say you have a bad power tube out of the box.

I let it go 10, 15 minutes. Even longer, after setting. I also rotated the tubes, as well as which socket I plugged the probe into.
I'm going to check all the sockets, since the factory Rubys may stretch th em out with the thicker pins. I'm sure if bad contact is made, it may cause it to go hot?

drain your caps before you're going to be checking socket retainers.

im guessing you have one or more bad tubes though. it happens, even brand new. guaruntees are non existent with current production tubes.
