Powering up old amps

Thats like my 71 Super Bass. I just recently changed the caps from the original. Nothing wrong with them but I thought it was time.
I’ve thought about buying 6 ARS caps and saving the originals….maybe I can squeeze out another 2% of awesome out of it; but the flip side is what if it takes away 2%…
 
I've heard the way to power on amps that haven't been touched in years is to:

1. remove the tubes
2. plug amp into a variac and set it to very low voltage
3. power the amp on and every 5 minutes, increase the voltage by 5 or 10 volts until it's up to standard

This will allow your caps to reform slowly enough as to not burn out due to getting the full wall voltage all at once.
