Pre amp tubes in a VH4 question

Considering I am still so new to the VH4, what are things I would expect from old dying pre amp tubes? I know microphonics is something to look for, but what else? How would they affect my tone? Would I maybe lose clarity and definition?

I swear that when I first read this it said, "Just chang your underwear!..."

I was pretty tired when I read it though... but I did as it said and although it didn't help my tone, it did boost my confidence and it did smell fresh... still won't wash them though... they are my lucky underwear haha
