Preamp to compliment the Bogner Fish??

Me personally the Mesa and classic. Mesa is easier to get and less expensive.


I know it's a drive, but I have VHT 2150s and Classics, and a Mesa 2:90 if you want side by side them.

First one I thought of was the X88 pre. Or I would wait for Diezel's pre to come out. (who knows when that will be?) Bet it will be killer!

I thought Diezel said the Customers were too stupid to have a decent power amp, and he didn't want spectators thinking Diezels sounded like shit due to user error.

I can kind of understand his logic so I dont blame him.

Nah, I'm not trying to sell you anything. All those power amps are mine and I'm keeping them. But, it would be a good A/B test for you. Anytime you're down here offers open. (we did just get some nice guitars in though... )

It hit like $1500, and that was just getting up there
especially since I just bought the fish.

On the good side, I have 5 quads of NOS siemens EL34
tubes coming! I've only ever had one set of those before
and they were sooo rich and sweet.

tubes coming! I've only ever had one set of those before
and they were sooo rich and sweet.

Hehe. Yah, $1550 was a bit more than I wanted to spend on that preamp.

I had an X88R once before that I picked up for (gulp) $550. I should have just kept that thing!
I remember liking the SLO a bit better at the time though. Both are long gone now.

I used to own a matchless gpr for about 6-7 years, I got the badcat and it smokes the matchless in every single aspect...youll pay more for the badcat..but its way more useable in terms of tones...(the matchless was a good pre)...Badcat one-up'd it though...by a long shot..

they are very very close sonically. The X99 may be slightly smoother for high-gain tones.
