prog metal band list - make or break?

  • Thread starter Thread starter glpg80

I wouldn't consider some of those to be prog... Pyramaze and Epica are more power metal... Simone is amazing in every way, and she's even hotter in person :D Manowar is really not prog but hilarious...

Zero Hour and Redemption are both really good, especially Towers of Avarice from Zero Hour and the Redemption discs after the first one. Ray Alder took over vocals for Redemption starting on the second album

With that said I have to admit there are a couple of bands on there that I've never hear of

In addition:
Evergrey
Fates Warning
Riverside

I'm seeing a trend as this thread goes on throwing power metal (Kamelot, Epica, Pyramaze, Angra) in as prog bands...

Cynic
Between the Buried and Me

You'd probably like Exivious a lot ;) It's Tymon from Cynic and some of the guys from Textures... all instrumental

I will definitely check them out. Another band who I've been digging recently, although not really prog metal, is God Is An Astronaut. It's pretty "chill" instrumental stuff but it is cool music for spacing out to.

these are all bands i have never heard of - which is awkward because its about all i listen to nowdays.

can anyone vouch for any bands in the list?

alot of them taken from progpower shows before ~2008 going back to 2003, and even before. since i was never at the shows, would like to know which ones to look into :)

I can vouch for all of the ones I left on that are great.....Balance of Power probably tops my list of those:

Also check out DGM, Power Quest, Theocracy, Adamantra, Arubis Gate, Seventh Wonder, Cloudscape,.

..so many already added.
The only one i know of not listed is Orphan Project

....and soon to be released Trinity Faction ;)

I remember listening to Manowar back in high school in the late 80s.

The only other one I've heard of is Raintime. Their CD - Flies and Lies is pretty damn good - except for the Beat It cover.

+1 to Periphery, Animals as Leaders and Cynic. I saw AaL a couple weeks ago and going to see Periphery tonight. Animals was freakin' amazing and their live tones were incredible. The lead guitarist was using an Axe-Fx and the other guy was playing through an Eleven rack. Sounded killer and very clear. Hopefully Cynic will be touring close to me so I can catch them as well.

Prog Metal
circle II circle

power of omens
ivanhoe

dreamscape

Heavy Metal
manowar
virgin steele (sounds very similar to Manowar, no true metal shtick, more power metal influence)
krucible

Power Metal
pyramaze
symphorce
destiny's end
cellador (Modern day Helloween)

Female Fronted / Symphonic Metal / Gothic Metal / Beauty & The Beast Metal / Metal Bands That Chicks Dig (whatever you want to call it)

Bands that don't fit in one genre
communic - Sounds like Nevermore to me
raintime - Sounds like Soilwork to me

some of my favorites are primal fear, thunderstone, and hibria.
Those bands are power metal (well, Primal Fear could be considered just heavy metal now a days, I guess). You'll probably like Cellador if you like Hibria. If you listen to Hibria I'm sure you listen to Angra too (if not, then there's another band for you to check out). Pyramaze is good as well.

I don't really care for progressive metal.

Female fronted stuff, I've heard people repeatedly say that After Forever's Prison of Desire and Decipher are the best of the genre, but I can't say either way because I don't like the style of music. The song Facade Of Reality by Epica is pretty good. Most of it is really predictable and the bands are all about how hot their singer is.

80's Manowar is quality heavy metal, people are turned off by their seriousness / true metal attitude / antics. Catchy songs, I like listening to the Battle Hymns and Hail To England a lot. Virgin Steele is great as well, but they have a lot of filler stuff on their albums (transition tracks, piano stuff etc).

I have one Communic album that is okay. I haven't heard anything else and I never really listen to them.

dude thanks for breaking that down for me - i see you saw my other topic

ill definately check them out. i agree, i like power metal more - but prog metal is alright - i dont hate it - it really depends on the mood of the day

Angra is great. there is alot that has been mentioned here in this topic that i have never heard of before. and i posted a topic with bands that i do listen to, and its easily 300+ bands i think. this topic is like a musical gold mine - i have alot of song searching and album research to do from everyones posts - im loving it

again thanks for taking the time to sort that list out and break them down - i will definately check out cellador

Cellador, to me, takes the ideas that DragonForce had (faster songs, more aggressive drums) and does them better with waaaaaaay better vocals too. Lots of solos too. But honestly, Hibria is one of my favorite "new" bands; great songs, great musicianship.

Tosin Abasi is a hell of a player. I'm also really looking forward to Periphery's album finally coming out on 4/20

These are all killer bands that are in the prog metal vein:

Armageddon (Chris Amott side project, very awesome)
Arsis (prog death-ish)
Disarmonia Mundi
Divinity (ENDITOL's band)
Into Eternity (The Scattering of Ashes is killer)

great bands though I personally wouldn't consider any of them prog except maybe Into Eternity. hey killer tone have you heard the other into eternity albums i though scattering was weak compared to the others, awesome guys they crashed at my other guitar players house a few times...

Oh BTW gigp80 have you heard porcupine tree, animals as leaders, periphery, the new cynic record traced in air, I Repress, some more bands to check out you may like.

If you consider IE prog then most of the others I listed would have to be included by default! :D I did not dig the last IE album near as much as The Scattering of Ashes, I haven't listened to it in a long time though so maybe I will revisit that.

Everyone chill out on the genre nazi-ism! I said "in the vein of prog" in my list, sheesh!

I didn't mean to rip you I just didn't think they were really prog. no vocal inflection on these damn boards! :cheers2:

I'm stupid BTW and got the into eternity albums mixed up. the scattering of ashes is my favorite also, its the newest one I was referring to whatever its called, kind of weak.

Tosin Abasi is a guitar god. I remember seeing his old band Reflux for the first time about four or five year ago and being absolutely speechless. they were better live than the album! so truly amazing! (minus the really generic vocals).

I got to finally meet Bulb from periphery twice this last week while working a few one offs for a band they are on tour with. we hit it off and geeked out over the periphery rigs for a while. they have really nice gear and know how to use it! he let me play his blackmachine and carvin guitars also. really cool dude and a great band!
