This is all your fault. When you bought that Sykes Greco, it put me on a Sykes kick and I thought it would turn into an easy project. 2 magnet orders from the UK, 3 orders for difference spacers, and a spool of 44 awg wire and / bunch of trashed bobbins later, not to mention spacer/magnet placement tweaking and here we are, LoL
yes sir-here you are brother....on the threshold of IMMORTALITY!!!! It's an honor to have been part of it sir.....

My Black Les Paul Custom awaits...

Nice insight!
Why are you cloning the DF? Is it out of production?

The original is out of production and unpotted. The consensus is that the reissues aren’t as good, thus $300 each for an original. Also, the coils shape is awkward due to the mechanics of the old machines. This is hard to match on a CNC winder that Gibson uses now.

There’s a certain clarity, feel that these Shaw DFs have that are very unique. Plus a unique low mid grunt.
But, feedback is prevalent when you run high volumes. That would be my only critique.

Sykes was crazy fast with his volume knob back in the day. He was always working that thing like a madman. The feedback would have been constant at his volume and level of gain.

Sounds great and very close. Your Psykes is maybe a little tighter with a wee bit harder edge on the attack but it sounds great.

GREAT JOB !!!

Sounds fantastic.....and you picked a challenging pickup to clone, so you should feel proud to have nailed it. (y)

I was just telling Scott the other day, I have a WS live dvd from Rio back in 84; he was doing exactly that…more props to him to play the way he does while managing the fb!
Cool. Yeah, I have that dvd too. Love to watch that guy play.

I believe Hetfield had these in his Explorer when he laid down the rhythm tracks for MOP, except for The Thing That Should Not Be when he used his 1985 Jackson King V with Seymour Duncan Invaders. Weird thing is in every picture I've seen of the "Kill Bon Jovi" King V the pickup pole pieces aren't giant like the Invaders. Did the Invaders from the 80's not have the giant pole pieces?
What do you cats think?

Can you wind these F spaced ? How much would the tone change ?

Hear some testing we did today. My IPhone usually records great, but always through a straight cab. I had to ditch alot of the video because the slant cab was pummeling my microphone in my normal position. I ended up getting videos from the side, that kills some highs. It sounded really good in room.

A few observations. This pickup sound absolutely huge. 1. It’s such a high output pickup that it really opens up when reducing the gain on the amplifier. 2. We turned it up pretty goof and Bobby played from outside the room. This thing sound so good when the amp pushed.

Shortened and levels adjusted

Thanks now not only do I want a pair of these, I want a JCM800 too
A little after 4;00 you see it thrown into the neck. I used a pair of my left over prototype bobbin and super fat 1/4 inch thick A5. So basically a DF type with only the middle magnet, the fat A5. It’s 16k and makes no sense, but it just work. Super thick neck lead tones
