PRS archon thoughts

Just got one a week ago and it's the 2014 model. I ran my Strymon delay in the loop and didn't notice any weirdness, but I'll have to check again. Have any Archon owners played this amp with the gain at 3:00 or higher? I find that when I palm mute and the gain is set that high I get this fuzzy sound with the chug. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? Wondering if mine has issues.

Can't say that I've ever felt the need to have the gain past 2 o'clock.

I don't hear what's wrong with Fluff's review... other than the boring riffs. I don't think that's a bad tone at all... not overly midscooped either.

I run my gain at 9-11 o'clock usually. Never needed (or felt) the need to go higher.

I was getting that thump sound with gain about noon. But it didn't happen every time I played it which was weird.

I'ts not that I feel the need for more gain. I just tried it and wanted to see what it did.

Mine did the same thing.

I'm assuming that it's normal. Do you still have your's?
No I traded it off a couple weeks back. Got a few different amps in and couldn't hang on to all of them.

I would assume it's normal too. I'll give it a try and let you know. Just like it's normal for a Mesa Recto to squeal like crazy with the gain maxed, just something inherent to the design.

Have you had a chance to check yet?

Just played it tonight and tested it with the gain maxed and it does get (expectedly) mushy and fuzzy in the low end. With more volume it seemed to firm up a bit though.

Thanks for checking. I'm sure it's a normal thing. Mine does have EL34's in it by the way.

Most amps seem to have more gain than what's "usable" and by usable I mean the point where notes in chords still come through, low end is tight but there is enough saturation where you're not fighting the amp, but it's not mushing out. For example, on a Soldano HR or SLO with the master up it's around 6-7 with a medium output pup. I've played some amps that stay tight and defined during the entire sweep of the gain control and it's funny, those are the amps that everyone states "don't have enough gain".

Another big Archon fan here. I always ran mine with the Gain knob at around noon and clean boosted it to taste. There was no fuzz or mud to speak of in this configuration.

As for the loop, although I didn't have any level-matching problems with mine, PRS sent me the "fix" component free of charge--and I wasn't even the original buyer. I did notice that the loop got noisy if I placed a pedal on top of the amp, rather than in front of it, but that was an easily rectified issue.

True story: I sold mine to buy a Rev Blue Uberschall and ended up preferring the PRS. I should get another...

I just did a quick clip of my archon 100w the other day. Everything set to 12 o’clock on the amp and boosted with a over drive.
