PRS Guitars? Never played one I really liked...

The 245 I have has taken me away from being a life long superstrat gguy....it sounds that good. Maybe I just got lucky :D

I think they are fine guitars but I just don't like the feel of them. The exception to that is the Paul Allender SE model. I really like the way that one feels. It has a very cool neck and comes with EMGs. I would take that one($569) over any other PRS i've played (not counting resale value). Too bad it has stupid bats on the neck.

Im a PRS fan but Ill add this horror story. One gorgeous night in the summer I came home from a gig around 4 in the morning. Far from sober, since it was a beautiful night, I thought it was safe to leave my McCartyand 2 strats in there cases standing up in the back of my truck. Well, Ill woke up around 1030 am to find out that it had poured out. all the guitars were soked. Cases drenched. The strats didnt even know what happened and were virtually unaffected by the water. The McCarty however never worked properly since. Wouldnt stay in tune for even 5 minutes. So $900 guitars were fine. $3600 guitar was fucked.

The point of my story is while they play and sound great, they are extremely fragile inmy experiance

In their defense, maybe the thick (cheap) finish on the Strats prevented water damage where the possibly more refined, more porous finish is what hurt the PRS?

droptrd, next time you should try to put your guitars in a fire...maybe the Strats won't like it as much as the PRS... :)

I have a 1990 PRS custom 24, it plays and sounds fantastic, when I first got it I couldn't put it down, a great guitar

That's been my experience as well. From what I've heard, the way his guitars are designed are such that they intonate better across the neck, at the expense of overtones normally present in Gibsons and Fenders.

I don't quite understand the logic to this statement. Being able to perfectly intonate a guitar should have nothing at all to do with whether its a 3" thick les paul or a parker fly or anything to do with what it sounds like.

I think maybe it has to do with nut compensation/temperment.

I always wanted to like PRS, but haven't found one that blows me away...the finishes do and the whole concept behind their guitars sounds great on paper to me.

I played a custom 24 and a mira that I just didn't gel with.

I played a swamp ash special 24th anni that I thought was real sweet.

The PRS HB Spruce I have will fight anyone's dad or es guitar and win.

Some guys don't like Les Pauls.

Some guys don't like strats.

Some don't like Marhall.

Some don't like Mesa.

Why is it that the anti PRS threads get more attention?

I will say I experience the same thing with all guitars, you have to find the right one, I am def a LP guy, most of my Guitar Heroes played LPs, but I have also found there were certain LPs I did not bond with either, like I said you just have to find the right one. My most recent purchase was a PRS McCarty with a rosewood neck, I can plug that guitar into a MKV and play any tune that I like of course, and it sounds great, great coil tap tones, very strat like, to classic rock to old school metal, whatever, it sounds great to me, really inspiring to me.

Could be. I have no idea why. Maybe the bolt on necks had something to do with it too? All I know is that Ill never get drunk and leave my gear sit outside overnight again

It's the fun bandwagon to jump on?

For a loong time, I could not gel nor play with any strat I picked up. Felt ackward and weird. Finally bought one up and it took a long bit of adjusting. I have always loved how my prs plays. But with any guitar, I could go to a store and play a dozen guitars of different brands and find just a couple that really felt good instantly. Which is why I usually won't buy a guitar unplayed ahead of time ya know. Though I think its possible to get used to how a guitar feels and plays over time.

i think the hate wagon only comes from the people that didn't like them.

the people that like them are too busy playing. lol.

I dunno why there are these bandwagon's in the first place...
they are all different guitars...buy as many as you can afford..

1 lp for the 24.75 slot
1 prs for the 25.0 slot
1 anderson for the 25.5 slot
couple of hollowbodies
a baritone or two
a seven string
then do a wood count and fill in any gaps. alder, maple, spruce, mahogany, swamp ash, koa, whatever else is in warmoth's strategy guide.

easy no?

eh, there are no right or wrong opinions on guitars obviously, they are so personal and taste is so subjective. However, my experience has been a lot different with PRS. Not liking them for whatever reason is one thing, but I think it's hard to criticize their quality or consistency. That's what they've built their reputation on, for a long time now. I love LP's and Strats, but in terms of consistency, I don't think you can compare them. It's always been about playing a bunch before you find the one that really speaks to you, I thought that was a given. You can tell PRS use quality wood, quality parts, and the guitars are looked at by a real person before they ship. I've picked up LP's and Strats where I had to wonder if anyone even looked at it. Get a good one though, and they are special IMO.

Tonally, I think someone hit on it before, they were designed to be that "in-between" strat and LP. I personally think they did a good job of it, but I prefer their singlecuts. Gibson obviously thought they were pretty good too, or they wouldn't have sued them to stop making it. After playing my friends singlecut, I was hooked on them. It had a fat punchy LP sound I craved, but also had a playability that I just couldn't find in a Gibson. That's obviously based on my personal preferences though, someone else will feel completely different, and that's not wrong either. I had to snag one for myself after that though, and in my personal experience, it was harder to find a dud than a great playing and sounding guitar. It took me a long time to decide on one because of that, but I have been nothing but impressed with mine, and it's a guitar I would never sell.
