If one wanted to test the PRS waters at about $1k, what would be the better buy? A used CE, a used Starla Stop Tail or a S2 CU or Mira?

I'd say go with the S2. I jumped feet first into the PRS pool and got an SC245. Getting a Studio tomorrow (hopefully). The S2 line, as far as I know is all USA built and is as close as you'll get to the "big boys" without sacrificing quality. I hear the SE line s very nice as well but I have yet to try one. I liked the Mira I played. Did not like the Starla but that had more to do with the Bigsby.

Definitely a used CE if you are indeed a stratman. I would avoid the S2's because they have cheaper hardware.

If you want straty tones from a PRS checkout the DC3 or NF3, the one's with the maple fretboard are killer. Guitar Center is blowing them out for around 1K. They used to sell new for double that. The necks on these guitars are awesome.

True. They are $1049 right now I believe.

Yeah that DC3 deal is a steal if you are into stratty sound. I would have gotten one if I didn't already have a strat I love.
If you are more of a humbucker guy, I'd go for a used custom22/24 you probably need to add few more hundreds but they are worth it. You can also get a used older mccarty for little above 1k too.

Im a big fan of the CE's. Own a couple along with a custom 24. If you search hard enough, you can find a used CE for under a grand.

+1. A year ago I had 29 USA PRS' in my personal stable, and 9 of them were CE's. As a former Strat Plus guy, I found the switchover very easy. My favorite is a beat to h*ll '89 alder-bodied one with a maple fretboard and neck.

29? Wow! We need a list ;)

I've heard that the S2 line is about the same quality as the SE line - rebranded with same parts, etc. not sure if that's true though, just read it somewhere.
I'd go for a used 'real' PRS myself, or maybe one of those gc blowout deals.

I picked up a used CU24. I saw a few that had some dings and scratches in the 1100 range. Great players, just not in lawyer collector shape. Lots of tones in the 5 way selector switch. Great light resonant guitar.

The DC3 is compelling, but I need another strat like a hole in the head!

The S2 is American wood, finish, frets and labor with import hardware and pickups. The S2 line is pretty much PRSs version of the Fender HW1/American Special.

Cool. Wasn't sure about how much was USA made. I actually like the SE line a lot. Great value. PRS filled that middle price point with the S2s, just not sure I'd buy one when good deals can be had on used "regular" PRS models.

Thats what I think as well, then the idea of a used S2 pops into my head.

I'm thinking used prices aren't going to be super competitive on the S2's.

I would not be surprised because those guitar look like se's but the headstock says PRS.

I have a ce24 and its not any strat, its all prs. One heads up, the ce24 has the wide thin neck. The ce22 has the wide fat.
