Prs sc-245 or Anderson drop top??

Guys..

Been playing les pauls and singlecut guitars for quite some time..however I do like the tone of single coils as well as humbuckers..

Here's my dilema..

I own a lovely prs sc245 with 1 piece maple top..nice weight and sounds great through pretty much anything..

Now I'm gassing for an Anderson drop top..but would have to move the prs..or trade it..

What say you guys?? Prs or Anderson?

They're very different guitars. I have a Drop Top and funny thing, i just played a PRS SC245 today at Sam Ash. Drop Top's are among my favorite guitars anywhere compared to anything. Mine is Basswood body with a maple top and an H2+ bridge humbucker. It sounds damm awesome, it's got plenty of balls for rock and metal. But the standard neck shape of the Drop Top is very slim, a perfect shredder, but some don't like that. The Anderson SA single coils....I'm a little lukewarm on them. But I'm not a single coil guy. But they don't really sound like a true single, and they don't sound like a humbucker, they're in the middle somewhere.

Anderson does make other singles that probably sound more vintagey though. I have owned a few Drop Tops in the past and each one had this ballsy oomph to it, they just sound huge IMHO. I have a Suhr S4 loaded with an Aldrich and i never play it because my Drop Top smokes it...IMHO again. But with the SA1R or 2R you will get some versatility. They can get pretty clear sounding and with a lot of gain you can shred with them. Playability on them is just perfect.

PRS245 is such a different animal. The one i played today was nice, played better than most Gibsons. But damm was it light weight. The neck wasn't too big. But you're still going from a Single cut shape to a strat shape. I don't know, try and play them both if you can. For me, a Drop Top is such a great guitar.

PRS guitars although built well and look pretty don't do shit for me when I plug them into an amp. Andersons on the otherhand are as good or better than anything out there, play and sound great... but they are way overpriced. Then again what isn't?
 
I'm no help, I own some fantastic PRS stuff, but am looking at a Cobra as we speak :lol: :LOL:
 
I have both.

I personally like the Anderson better. I keep trying to get myself to sell the PRS, but it sounds so good it's tough to let go.

If you love the way the SC sounds, and are used to single cuts, I'd keep it.

If you're open to selling, definitely try the Anderson .03 oversize neck if you have a chance.

I thought I liked skinny necks until I got my hands on that :D

Anderson for me. I don't like PRS. I guess they are well built and all that, but I can't get into the sound, playability, or looks. The Anderson Hollow Drop Top is the best all around guitar I have ever played.
 
There is also the difference in scale length. I have a drop top that will never go anywhere. I'll disagree with the overpriced assessment and say they are priced fairly for the level of work into them (and what the market will bear). I had an older pre-lawsuit singlecut that was cool, but not even in the same league. I'd get the Anderson. If you buy used, you should be able to move it pretty easily if it doesn't work for you.
 
I'm very excited about my Drop Top that will be delivered this month. I almost went with a Bulldog but I am really into strat style bodies. I got to try out an Anderson Cobra last month. I must say I want one of those now too. I have played a half dozen single cut PRS guitars. They were cool but nothing special for me. I say give it a shot and try one out if possible.

If you want to go with a single cut style guitar Anderson makes two: the Atom and the Bulldog. The Atom is Tom's original single cut style where the Bulldog modeled more after a Les Paul. Here are a couple to drool over:

I haven't played either of those guitars, but I can say that I think moving a guitar that you really love to satisy some gas is a mistake.
 
I have a quilt Cobra S hollow and a quilt drop top w/floyd (that actually looks like Danyeo's, at least from his video). Fantastic guitars. I also have a PRS semihollow Cu22 quilt that weighs around 5 pounds and is a killer rock/blues axe.

I'd be pretty hesitant to dump a guitar I really bonded with to take a chance on another without being able to really play/put the new guitar through it's paces. Also, if you dig the scale on the 245, you might want check out an Anderson Cobra. I have a Les Paul that does that Les Paul thing, but the Cobra is so much easier to play it's almost unfair.

It´s kind of an apples to oranges comparison, so I guess it boils down to whether you want a killer modern strat or a killer modern singlecut.

With that said, personally I´d definitely go for a Drop Top. I love my DT to death, and have never really grown fond of the various PRS models.
 
FWIW:

I've personally owned over 300 guitars and played and set up thousands.
My 96 Anderson is the best guitar I've ever experienced.

Dan that drop top sounds great..sounds thicker than what I expected..I love those single coil tones too..
It's a tough choice!! I was jamming my 245 through my cornford mk50 and g system today and it sounds great..

I have no way of testing an Anderson through my rig as the nearest dealer is something like 150 miles away...

Dunno what to do?? :doh: :doh: :confused:
 
put an Anderson H2+ in your SC245 then you'd have a PRA or an TRS! :rock:
 
Never a good move to dump something you really love to get the unknown. If you disliked the SC245, then by all means -out the door. If it were a situation where you needed to get rid of something to get something to better fit your needs(need a trem, need single coils,etc) - again, out the door. GAS is tough to dump something you like alot, especially with guitars - no 2 are EXACTLY alike no matter how tight the QC is.

I have no doubt the Anderson's are great, it'd be well worth the 150 mile trip and take your PRS along to do side by side comparisons - then you'd have an idea of what floats your boat more.
