I sold an item today privately and the buyer used PP. I immediately got this message from them. Can anyone tell me what this is about?

Because you receive payment for goods or services through PayPal, you must verify your U.S. taxpayer status to avoid limitations to your account.

They’re asking for my SS #. I’m assuming to pay taxes?

I would not give out my SS#. Scam!
I don’t plan to but I’m pretty certain it’s not a scam. It’s a pop up on my PP account when I’m signed in.

I've been using PP for about 20 years and have never seen this pop up. Are they asking for the full SS number or the last 4?

This sounds like something new, I had a couple of transactions a couple of months ago and never saw anything like this.

My guess is they are preparing to apply state taxes to each and every Paypal transaction. Just like now we are paying taxes on Ebay for used items that were taxed when they were bought new. Since states are mostly bankrupt they schemed this approach to add revenue to the coffers.

Just wait until Illinois taxes you for the amount of miles you drive a year to all downstate non Chicago citizens, YEP... the Chicago reps keep talking about this....

Really, nobody has any info on this?
I’ve sold a few small ticket items over the past 3 months and never saw this either. Most recent was 2 weeks ago.
 Don’t trust that msg

It pops up as a notification and it looks as though they’re wanting me to fill out a w-9. Like I said, I don’t get it I don’t really sell much so I’m kinda confused. I thought there was a certain dollar amount you had to hit before they started this?

Paypal started requiring a social security number several years ago if you move more than $20,000 or pass 200 transactions a year for income tax reasons.

Paul is a baller then obviously

Call them. Unless you’ve sold over iirc $20,000 in a 1 year period, PP will not ask for your SS#. Something seems off.

The message is legitimate, but maybe not applicable to you. It depends on things like whether your PP account may be set to a business status account, your local tax laws etc
I get that message regularly for my business account.

You might be right.

I've had to supply my EIN and my social security # to PayPal for years. Now it's about the states getting their sales tax money if you sell items online.

Ive used PP 16 years & ive been buying stuff almost everyday for the last 2 weeks and ive never seen what you're talking about.
Paypal always will tell you they will never ask for a password or personal info in an email.
I have had many phishing emails posing as PayPal.
Forward that email to : spoof@paypal.com and they will respond.
I had to switch from yahoo to gmail because of the phishing.
Fake paypal emails are one of the most common ways hacker get you to give up personal info.

After I got the email I logged into my account and it was there also in my notifications

They have asked for my SS# and income. I have Paypal credit, not sure if that's the difference.

I don't think I have given them my SS. I can't spend the balance from payments received. I have transfer it to my bank instead.
