I was wondering if any of you guys that own or have had direct experience with Soldano SLO's can let me know what the possible mods are and what each of them actually do. Shark I know you like your SLO's with no mods, correct??

I know I am showing my ignorance, yet I want to be informed before I make any decisions to buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
GtarLover

Mine has the depth and I just use it at lower volumes and never turn it up more then 1/4. A litle makes a big difference.

had one with mods and now i own a stock one....prefer the stock

Thanks for the replies...it really sounds as though the mods that are available are not something that anyone uses all the time, like say with a Marshall Mod that is hardwired.

I hear you when you say that with the depth mod a little can go a long way...that's a knob on the back correct? Then I have seen switches on the front, are those the scoop or Haynes mods??

Love to hear from some more SLO owners about how/when they use their mods and with what channels, etc...

Thanks,
GtarLover

In my opinion the SLO is perfect in it's stock form. I have yet to hear an SLO with mods sound better than a stock SLO. My recommendation is to buy the amp bone stock and use it for a while. If you decide to go with a stock SLO let me know because my brother wants to sell his.

Stock is soooo boring!

At least get one with Depth and the FX-Loop bypass switch. Warren Haynes mod is pretty worthless for most players. Makes the amp too dark sounding and not in a good way. Having the FX-Loop bypass switch makes the amp more punchy. Scoop Mod only works on the Normal channel and just makes the clean more Fendery sounding.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the mods, but I understand why people get them. One other mod is the 1/2 power switch.

The mods just don't work for me because they are really not conducive to a band setting.

I've had more versatility with different tubes and speakers than the mods would afford anyway. ;)

I have a Depth mod on mine, I use it sometimes at home for a change, that's about it. I spoke to Mike about removing it but he told me to leave it connected and assured me that when it is dialed to zero it is bypassed and doesn't affect the tone at all. Stock SLO is all you need.

This is awesome, thanks again for all the wisdom.

It sounds like most of you are really feeling like stock is the way to go. I suppose Mike would be happy to hear that :D

I will undoubtedly take the leap very soon...last question, if I end up with a stock SLO, can I just send it to Mike for a mod?

Yes, but that won't be very cost effective. ;)

Thanks Shark...that's what I thought, but wasn't totally sure.

How many SLO's are you sporting right now? I think I have seen at least 2 rack mounted versions correct? And didn't you mention somewhere that you have one on order right now too?

You are are dedicated dude!! Obviously, you have found your weapon of choice

Yeah, they work for me.

I have a first year, #19, with 5881s, my custom red one with 6L6s, and the Hiwatt/SLO with KT66s. I do have a pretty sweet one in the works (rack mount, bare bones, Chromed just like the original SLO and matching my VHT Classic. There is a pretty special production model in the works - possibly. But I'm sworn to secrecy.

Mods after the fact through Soldano are pretty pricey. I think about $250 each. But you can get some amp guys to do them for much less.

That is quite a collection...you have a variety of tubes as well. Do you have a fav or is it really about getting the variety, like using the 6L6's for a certain tone and switching to the 5881's or KT66's for a different range? That chromed rack sounds totally AMAZING!!

I imagine that the 6L6's have a really different sound...I have a bunch of heads, but no SLO

Soon, oh yes, soon...

Reviving this thread cause I don't feel the original question was answered - what the possible mods are and what each of them actually do?

we seems to have comments on:
1. Depth Mod
2. Scoop mod
3. FX-Loop bypass switch
4. Warren Haynes mod

Hope people out there can tells us what they actually do? Thanks in advance!

Depth mod is a knob on the front that adds more low end (similar I think to the resonance knobs you find on a lot of modern amps).

Scoop mod/Dimartini mod scoops out midrange from the clean/crunch channel. I believe SRV had a mod that would do this for both channels, but I'm not sure if Soldano does that mod.

Haynes mod clips the bright cap on the OD channel (the stock amp already has a switch for that for the clean/crunch channel).

The FX loop arguably is a gain stage or something like one. Bypassing it will change the tone of the amp.

Depth mod really only affects it at a lower volume IMO. I've had one stock, and one with all the mods except fx loop. When you turn it up to 2-3 the stock sounds to me like the one with the depth mod, so no difference. The De Martini does sound nice with the clean channel. I'd leave the fx loop alone.. Don't wanna change the tone.
