Question about the Splawn Quick Rod amps

I am interested in a Splawn Quick Rod, but I have never seen or heard one in person. Therefore,
I do not know how they really work.

As I understand it, they are 3 channel amps, or gears as they call them. I have a few
questions, and would appreciate any input you more experienced amp guys can give.

1) How high gain are they ? Similiar to a Soldano HR or SLO ? (I have heard those)

2) How do the channels work ? (Can I get a clean, dirty, and a boost for leads ?)

3) Do they have reverb ?

4) Effects loop ?

Thanks for any and all help,

Scott

As a QR owner I'll chime in.

1) Gain goes from what I call "Mild to Wylde" - if you need a boost, you're doing it wrong

2) There is s fully independent clean channel that can get into AC/DC territory. There is a Solo Volume knob that you can set for a lead boost which can be engaged via the footswitch

3) No reverb

4) Solid effects loop. A nice plus is with the effects loop, there is a master volume that will allow you to play the amp at a nice low volume.

Love the hell out if my QR.

The Quickrod is actually a 2 channel amp, clean and overdrive. But you can change "gears" on the fly with the newer 4 button foot switch. Plus with od1/od2, and solo boost at your feet, you have many different levels of gain to select.

I owned one of the older models. I found it kind of stiff, but once you hit its sweet spot I was in heaven. Unfortunately, that sweet spot was stupid loud! I was craving something a little more modern at the time, so I moved on from it. Still kinda wish i kept it though. Like I said, STUPID loud.

Her what tuning was the chug part In? Listening on an iPhone and watching was kinda hard to tell. Sounded great though, with what sounded like lots of saturation.

I believe the tuning was Eb for most then I dropped to C# for the last bit. LOVE my damn Quick Rod. Can't say it enough.

I have 2 marshall jubilees but I've been looking for something a tad more modern and heavier. I tune down to D standard and play some angry punk rock so I need something with sag and a tad bit of low mids. I know the nitro had more bottom and all that but i just love the quick rods marshall on roids sound.

Best amp I've ever owned for the hard rock/classic metal stuff I play. Essentially a hot rodded Marshall. Foot switchable 2 channel amp with a boost for leads. Decent fx loop with minimal tone suck. FWIW, I've owned the SLO, PT100, Bogner Shiva and both the 101b and 20th Anni XTC and the Splawn is the only one that has met (and exceeded) all of my wants in an amp.

I've got an '06 3 pre and a 2012 QR and neither are going anywhere any time soon.

Nice sounding stuff. Loved the way my QR sounded. Is yours a standard QR or do you have the B+ version?
Thanks. Mine is the B+.

It was funny because I was looking at a quickrod B+. I currently use a boosted JCM800 2204. When I was listening to some pretty good clips, my wife walked by and said it sounded right up my alley. Lots of people say they're too stiff and unforgiving. But a JCM can be pretty revealing as well becauswe I don't use a lot of gain. I don't like a too sturated sound. And, I love the in your face sound of the quickrod. Aslo, I never got what people mean by weird mids? They don't sound weird to me.

Vrad has some awesome clips available. Amoung other things, he can cop that lynch tone with it too. But Vrad can pretty much make anything sound good.

Buy it. Then tell us all about it so I can live vicariously thru you. QR's are on my list of must-owns one day.

It's an awesome amp IMO, but you have to gel with his amps in general. They seem to have a love hate thing with a lot of people. I happen to really dig them, so I own a couple. If you end up vibing with them, Scott is a class act, and has been considered that way for a long time in this business.

I own a b+ qr and a nitro btw. I don't find them to be too dry at all, but they are both newer versions. He has gone through several iterations of both amps over the years.

I had an older (maybe '06) that I loved; never understood the stiff comments...

I will tell you that I thought it was broken, until I turned it up to REALLY loud levels

Tried one of the newer versions (maybe 10 or 11) that I didn't dig nearly as much.

I agree. I tell peoke the amp (QR) has that great Marshall vibe with the tight yet open mid range feel of my Fryette Deliverance. I absolutely love the amp and will be adding a Nitro to the mix. Actually the 50 watt KT88 loaded Super Comp which is just the dirt channel of the nitro.

My take on the whole "weird mids" phenomena was that it was started by folks who spend way more time talking about amps and listening to clips rather than doing any real playing or tweaking themselves...the "wannabe" crowd. I've played several Quick Rods and they're simply great amps. If I didn't already have the "hot-rodded Marshall" tone nailed, I'd buy one in a heartbeat...great amps and unbeatable customer service.

I have an early 3 pre model that's been my main amp since '06. I had my buddy's newer B+ QR and I honestly didn't care for it. The nature of my older one had a much more angry 'in your face' tone that my ears like hearing. The newer one, while cool, was softer and lacked the 'bite' of my amp

I might add that these things are built like tanks! In all the years I've had mine I have never had an issue other than tubes failing. I live in Ohio and have left my head and 2x12 in my trunk for days driving around on bumpy roads both in winter and summer. Bring it in, let it warm up a few, fire it up, and...voila!

Love that amp!

My take, exactly.

Feel was too different, as well. Whatever he changed he made it too generic, for my tastes; just another high gainer, at that point.

The original I had was unreal; I played it back to back with Joe Holmes' Jose Marshalls, and it was right there...tone and feel.
