I'm trading a guitar and the guitar I'm getting is set up with 11's and has a bone nut. Is this going to be an issue since I use 9's on my guitars? He's already getting the better end of the deal in this trade and with shipping, a new nut and set up it may just be a deal breaker for me

Any advice??

I put 11's on all the guitars I get without even thinking about that

Now that you mention it...

I would think you'd be ok. You'd have an issue if we're going the other way. Guitar set up for 9's and going to 11's

The big question, is the nut dead stock?
If those slots were widened, they might also be slightly deeper, and you might find the 9s sit a bit too close to 1st fret....

Then you get to kik the nut out and shim it, or start over with a fresh nut and some fret files....

But that's only if its been Hacked at....

Try a set an see what's what. And Good luck on the trade!

Thanks. These are my exact concerns. The nut is not stock so I'm hoping with a neck and trem spring adjustment (and intonated) it'll all be fine :scared:

Or you could jab a screwdriver under the nut and rip it off, and put a folded matchbook cover under that nut.

REMEMBER: When re-seating the nut,
More sustain CAN be had if you slap a large ammt. of Elmer's Paste ( PASTE!! NOT wood glue) all over the headstock first.

Not trying to be rude, but why would the smaller strings be closer to the fret? The bottom of the cut is the bottom of the cut no matter what size strings you run. The only downside would be the width of the cut allow the strings to SLIGHTLY move side to side. Just my $0.02.

I've never had any trouble with any kind of nut within that range of gauges.
