I'm kinda curious to hear if some of you guys think the SigX lacks gain. I mean I know it can get a good amount of gain for rhythm stuff but I feel like on the lead channel it could have a touch more. Maybe it's just my amp in general but it's just not as fluid as I would hope, even with a boost. I love the amp I'm just wondering what you guys think.

Agreed, but I think of it less as a lack of gain and more as a lack of compression. It has a definite effect on the feel of the amp, particularly when you're playing leads.

I always have a Koko Boost running into the front of mine.

I use a Fulldrive if I want more gain, saturation or want to change the feel.
I don't really feel I need it with Sig X for most applications.

Never had an issue with the 2 I’ve owned but I guess I never used a ton of Gain either.

I had one for years and never had the gain over half way, would love to have one again it was one of the best amps i've owned. It definitely not super saturated like some amps so the feel can be a bit drier if you are used to the Engl, Mesa, 5150 type amps. For me it wasn't an issue. Just traded it for something else as I had a gas attack!

I owned one. Not too saturated is how I would describe the distortion. Sounded like a cross between a Marshall and Hiwatt. Stupid loud amp though. I think I read somewhere that Fryette said his amps were rated at there true wattages, so his 100 watt was pushing 100 watts of KT88 power. Volume on 3 my house was shaking, so much power.... :D

I see it as more Hiwatt than Marshall. For me it's kind of a mix of Mesa Mark and Hiwatt...but all Fryette. All the Fryette amps kind of have a similar flavor. Tight, focused.

I know this is not only an obvious observation but was built this way by mr.fryette(as in "I get it,they are different designs ment for different players")

I didn't find the absolute joy I get from any of the pittbulls I have owned from either the sig-x or the deliverance. The 50/ST, classic and ultralead were all game changers for me. Didn't like the sig-x or deliverance at all.

i had one for a bit, never thought it didn't have enough gain. awesome amp.

Agree. I had one for awhile and loved it in fact it's right up there as far as one of my favorite all time amps. Only reason I sold mine, I was playing a ton and wanted an exact backup of my main amp. I never thought gain was an issue either. I've always figured I'd grab a used one at sometime.

I have a Sig:X and it definitely isn't as high gain as a VH4 or a Savage, for example. But it is still a high gain amp.

I like to push mine with a TS9 sometimes.

Have you tried something that's not a V30 with it?
Cause sometimes amps sound more saturated with a different speaker type.

I can tell that my deliverance 60 sounds a bit congested with say a marshall speaker than through an orange etc.

Steve F started using Fane speakers to make the UL sound less dry and more juicy and saturated. Maybe the answer is something like a greenback, fane, creamback and along those lines.

I would not say it lacks gain as I play a ton of hard rock and metal and consider myself a gain head and never found it lacking. However, it is a dry and tight distortion so it might take a bit getting used to. That being said it is also an extraordinarily articulate amp with loads of sustain.

Curious what settings your using if not getting enough gain ???

These are close to what I usually use for highgain.

Scooped clean / Point of break-up

Clean Channel:
Brite
Norm or Boost
100W
Open
Volume - 10:00
Treb - 2:30
Mid - 10:00
Bass - 2:00
Pres - 1:30
Depth - 2:00

I turn up the Volume till it breakup then back till clean as I want. From there I turn on the Boost for crunch and low gain leads.

Modern Crunch

Rhythm Channel:
Burn
Gain I - 3:00
Gain II - 5:00 / full
Boost On
More Mode
100W
Master - 9:00
Scoop
Treb - 3:30
Mid - 9:30
Bass - 2:30
Pres - 4:00
Depth - 2:30

Switch to Live and Wood from here for a other voice.

Singing Lead

Lead Channel:
Brown....all three work.
Gain I - 2:30
Gain II - 5:00 / full
Boost or Norm
More Mode
40W or 100W
Master - 9:00
Wood
Treb - 3:00
Mid - 9:00
Bass - 2:30
Pres - 4:00
Depth - 2:30

If I can't hear myself I usually turn up the Midrange before the Master.

I use my guitar volume and other controls a lot.

I thought it had a ton of gain. But shortly after I got the Sig:X, I had an opportunity to get one of my dream amps - a VHT Ultralead. Both amps were nice but I liked UL voicing WAY more. It was really aggressive and in your face. Man, I’d like that one back.

I'm starting to think its the pickup in the guitar I was using. I was using a Dimarzio Titan and compared to a SD Distortion it's extemely stiff and doesnt have a lot of output. the SD sounded way better on the Sigx

I had the Sig:x. Plenty of gain, but had to get it loud to give it some girth.
I actually preferred using a Hot Plate with it, so I could crank it but tame the volume, and for what it did to the eq.

I think it lacks some of the juicyness that Engls and Mesa Marks have, a bit less saturated.

It's dry and tight, articulate and direct, but if you're looking for liquidy leads, look further... :aww:

Or use a boost. The amp can absolutely melt into liquid territory.
