Does tuning down to pitch if a string is a little sharp cause an issue with the fine tuners? I am wondering if i should always be tuning up to pitch. Lets say i tune sharp should i tune flat past the note and back up? Also i have been tuning EEBAGD...Is that the preferred method? Regardless my suhr modern seems to be very stable just trying to make life easier on myself.

I´ve never noticed any differences in tuning up or down with the fine tuners. I always tune up to pitch on the regular tuners, though, since I imagine it leaves less slack. I always just go across the strings E to E, too. A Floyd isn´t really a mystery as long as you keep the balance between strings and springs in mind and stretch the strings properly.

I've always tuned up to pitch because it's more stable and ensures tension is on the string. It shouldn't really matter because of the locking nut, but I still "tune up" to pitch with a Floyd Rose and it results in less messing with the fine tuners.

not sure if I understand your question fully but ->

*Anytime I tune (normal tuners on headstock or mini ones on FR), I go flat and return back to pitch. This way I believe you are getting more consistent torques on the tuners compared to say being sharp and coming back down.
*On the bigger strings (low E and A) I usually purposely tune them flat and then when I lock down the nut they come near pitch. The skinnier strings are not affected as much by the FR lockdown on the nut.

I am talking about the fine tuners once the nut is locked. My question had nothing to do with the initial tuning.

I am not Floyd Rose however I like to tune UP to pitch.

Not sure if it even affects the tuners whatsoever but it just feels more natural to tune UP and perhaps maybe create less tension.

Another reason is just personal preference, I have some older guitars that slip out over time and I would rather tune up until there is no fine tuner left VS. tuning down and having the tune get all loose on me.
