If I'm getting a lot of warble high up on the fretboard (I never play there..but still...)..is this likely due to having pickups too high and magnet pulling too strong on strings?

Could be the pickups. Lower them and see. I find if i got really old strings on my guitar they can do that a bit, try changing strings if they're old.
