Quick Question About Amp Volume

Hey guys. As most of you know I sold my Cali modded Marshall to "squank". I fired up the amp and tested it before I packed and shipped and it worked perfect. He received the amp today. He unpacked the power tubes and put them in the amp. He turned it on and seems to be getting really low volume from the amp. He checked the fuses and they appear to be fine. We checked the settings on the amp and will do so again this evening.

From your perspective, does this sound like a tube (power or preamp) issue? There is some volume but nowhere near what it should be. I just want to get the amp up and running for him and was hoping we might get some feedback from the community. Bill is going to do some tube replacement this evening to see if that was the issue. My assumption is that this might be the problem but thought I would ask you all. Thanks in advance!

does it have switching (channel switching or vactrols or relay switching?..sounds like it took a hit. thats what shipping companies do now as part of their service. They have a special abuse department.

When I bought a Marshall 6101LE combo, it had a similar issue and it turned out to be a not properly seated preamp tube. I went through and reinstalled all the tubes and was good to go. Hopefully that will fix this issue.

Mike Fortin (being the man he is) chimed in by e-mail and I think we found the next step. I will post it when it is up and running for Bill. If it is what Mike said he thinks it is than it is actually a feature/function within the amp and not an issue.

Update:

Bill got home and did what Mike (and Dan) suggested. Fired right up!

As a point of follow up here is the dealio:

I always played the Cali modded Marshall with the loop engaged. Never tried it without using the loop. Bill plugged straight into the amp without using the loop and there was very little volume. I thought it may be a loop question so I e-mailed Mike and here is what he suggested:

Make sure the fx loop is set to parallel if nothing is in the loop. If it is set to series loop and nothing is completing the signal path from send to return....no sound will happen.

Sure enough, Bill gave it a go and all is good. Looking forward to reading Bill's review. Loved that home and glad it went to a great owner.

I heard thos NOS versions produce the most organic and woody tones. I'll have to stock up.
