this new cover band I joined is playing "Over my Head"...this is my first foray into Kings X....I like the tune...it's different. The issue is, some of the chords are a complete whore to play (based on the tab I found online).....real finger stretches (and I have big hands)....its the weird dissonant chords in the song. Anyone play this tune?

Cheat and drop the note played by your pinky off the chord or find another voicing for it?

First of all...great tune by a great band. Actually, I think its one of the more straightforward KX tunes...in terms of tuning and general difficulty.

I think the chords you're talking about are in the chorus...but as far as I can tell, they are the same chord fingerings, and they just walk up...I think its like D7#9, Eb7#9 and E7#9 (the old Purple Haze chord, right?). There's also a F7#9 thrown in as well in a few places during the chorus. These chords are all within a 3 fret span, so I don't think they are all that difficult, but I could be way off. Maybe try a different tab?

The verses are all just 5th chords I think.

The solo - now that's where Ty starts crawling all over the place!!

I agree with Rayneman. Sounds like you may have a badly tabbed version of the song. The "b7#9" chord is a fairly easy grip. Also, Ty tends to mute the "4th" note in the chord. That is, on the Eb7#9, he sometimes leaves out the Ab. It gives a more powerful sound...a'la the intro to Dogman

I'm guessing he's talking about this tab:

shows a 3 fret stretch rather than the 2 of Jimi Chord..could be tab is wrong but I'm tone deaf,so :D

Thats it

I've cheated by not using my pinky on the B string. Is this tab wrong?

Don't know any of the songs but know Ty pretty well and built him an amp back in the old Lab-5 pre amp days. They rock.

Yeah, I think that's wrong. Take the '3' on the A string and move it up one for each change. So, for the first one it would be 4, then up one each time...same grip of the chord each time...should make it a TON easier.

Yeah, that tab's definitely wrong. Even though the chord now becomes simpler, I still think Ty purposefully mutes the 2nd lowest note in the chord (most of the time). One thing's for sure, he definitely nails the chords with a lot of precision and power.

Those look like Min7th chords vs. Dominant...I used to play this song years ago and I do recall there is a Min7 chord during the main rifff when it resolves to Cmin7. I think it i played the Dom9 ( Hendrix chords) with exception of that Cmin7.

Godd luck, sounds like a fun gig....vocal harmonies are gonna challenging.

Yes that tab's wrong...major 3rd instead of a minor...but you can skip that note completely. My band plays this song once in a while...super fun but hardly ever goes over...people think it's an 'original'.
