I always see these come up constantly. I fou d one in lemonburst that is flamed the way I would like it but if they're that good why are they always fs?
probably people making money on them. I've had a few and had one mediocre one. the best was a 40th anni Murphy. None of them feel like the real thing though. When my bud let me play his I was shocked by how it felt different. I'm sure sdmf38 played that same one...or a few probably.

Because a lot of guys buying that stuff are simply collectors who don't even know what a good LP sounds/plays like and are always onto the next one. They will never be happy with their playing, so why not be happy with the guitar being pretty? And then the next pretty one comes down the pike. Second verse same as the first. With all that said, the guys that actually do play and are really into LP's...it seems like when they find a good R9, it's a keeper for them.
Some are better than others. I would think maybe they could be offing the ones they don’t like as much or cashing out if they got a good deal. Thankfully many of those guys don’t actually judge guitars that much by tone and more by the neck and other little details that are not about sound (very stupid imo). Wizards and those Fortin modded tube screamers are also often for sale, but still great products. Doesn’t always mean they’re not good if fs often. Either way R9’s are one of those things I’d try before buying. They’re not like one of those rare items where you don’t have a choice. IMO the McInturff Carolina Custom I sold last week was better than the R9’s I’ve played. Despite it being not as well known it sold within a day because those that are familiar know they’re good stuff
Also, fwiw the best non-vintage Gibson I’ve tried so far was an R6 (1956 Reissue) that was re-fitted with humbuckers, but that guy cherry picked that R6 out of over 100 custom shop LP’s. ‘59’s aren’t necessarily better IME. In fact one of my friends had a real ‘56 LP also fitted with PAF’s that he liked better than a real ‘59 he had and so sold the ‘59
Some people buy them online without actually knowing that the neck is super fat. Then they get the guitar and realize that the neck is not comfortable for them. I have had the opportunity to play three actually '59s. None of them had a neck as big as the reissues.
I spent over 11k on a 50th anni model once. #32 of 50. Took it back...wigged out when I realized how much I spent. I understand about not having that much cash tied up in one.
this one-
From my time on MLP, it seems that a few of the usual suspects are essentially "influencers" for certain shops, and have a little more room to wiggle on prices and are able to help themselves and the retailer out...
I never see the amount of a particular model for sale in the used market as much of an indicator of quality. Unless it's something obvious. I got a great 2016 LP std from a guy who just didn't vibe with it but I sure did.
I have never had a bad Gibson Custom shop guitar but I have seen some dogs lately on Sweetwater and at GC weighing in at nearly 10 pounds and with crummy tops. As many of the as there are in circulation, it is no wonder you see plenty of them for sale. Doesn't make them a bad guitar. I love my R9 and my 68. Not for sale... ever...
