I just need to get this out of my system. Scroll if offended.

I am sick and goddam tired of all these videos flooding social media of some kid butchering a guitar solo (90+% of the time its Eruption) only to see countless comments heaping endless praise for ‘Nailing It!’ and ‘Shredding!!!’

On the one hand, I should be happy that kids that age are still drawn to this type of music and still think it’s cool. But when the execution is at best 4.5 on a scale of 1 - 10, the superlative ‘dropped jaw’ comments are just insufferable.

I don’t want/need to see dick comments breaking the kid‘s spirit, but save the ’dropped jaw’ comments for the precious few videos out there that are on the level of the Yngwie medley that was posted here recently. THAT is jaw-dropping.

Its sort of like seeing some kid in PE class sink 1 free-throw in 7 tries and commenting: “THE NEXT MICHAEL JORDAN!!!!!!”

Honestly I agree, but even more annoying is how no one seems to be able to actually write interesting music anymore - especially the aforementioned "kids."

Even YouTubers, all of their music reminds me of when you would get a bad record label compilation album in the 90s and you would have to skip all the boring, banal, uncreative bands that sound like they were created in a focus group

Those comments saying "he shreds!" On the kid videos you mention are definitely really annoying though.

Agreed, to be fair, alot of those can be bots auto-posting. I get "OMG AMAZING" on my TikTok/Instagram and it's an add for followers or some scam. It sucks because I'd rather have a human tell me I suck, than a bot tell me I'm amazing haha

I would put this down to over saturation, not a lack of writing talent. In the 80s you'd have the great bands presented to you on a plate via record stores, record label promotion etc. Now adays if you go onto Spotify and hit random in a Metal playlist, it will likely suck much like in the way you mentioned on compilation discs, but on an EXTREME scale.

Also throw in the Nostalgia bias of the music we grew up with being conveniently the "best", that every generation has.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's 100% actually the case

Even the "great musicians" with signature guitars with big companies can't write songs or music worth a shit ?

H.e.r. can literally barely play cowboy chords, let alone write amazing music, and has a signature fender (!) strat, Gibson made a Jonas Brothers (!) junior, and that isn't even getting into all the YouTuber signature guitars

Everyone has nostalgia bias to a certain extent, but there's tons of data and research about the dumbing down of modern music (and especially lyrics) out there

Seems these days there are heaps of praise for what I call 'parrots". Wow, you copied something. Congratulations.
How about having your own style? When you have your own style and people praise you at least you know you're on to something, and you own it.

I see your point. Maybe a combination of both?

When I got the Powerslave album by Maiden, I listened to it over and over, became obsessed with it. I got to focus on one record for a long time. I can't do that anymore as there is billions of records at my finger tips, most of which isn't very good, so I never focus on one album. Spend more timing searching through shit to find a nugget of gold.

Signature guitar and influencers, that's just capitalism doing its thing. Shareholders want dividends and they don't care whether someone can play or not. Think we can all agree it sucks.

We had stupid and simplistic as "My Girl Lollipop" 40s/50s/60s crap which literally was the same song over and over again with the same lyrics and chords. I feel pop music is still made this way and metal sometimes copies the formula to gain success quickly.

I hate the videos of the bra wearing, 5 out of 10 body and face playing basic riffs and getting alot of followers for reasons outside music.

THIS.

I mean, I get that gear companies HAVE to market their product, and it's cool that SOME of these guys get sig gear but then you hear them play, and I'm sorry but even if the player is proficient what about the original music? Anything? Other than random shredding on Youtube? Cmon. 20, 30 yrs back you had to AT LEAST be a really great lead player AND have some experience on stage, with original music.
Now, crickets.

It used to be an insular, insider hobby and industry, and unfortunately it has been commodified into a meat grinder

We basically only get legacy signature guitars and gear from old musicians who actually played and wrote music 30 years ago

Signature gear from "who can sweep the fastest" djent tech-emo InFlUeNcErS

And then woke affirmative action signature models for artists who fit a paradigm because the HR department keeps harassing the suits. Ironically, there are tons of real musicians in "marginalized groups" who deserve those signature guitars and sponsorships way more than H.e.r and St Vincent

I think it might be because the music industry as a whole has been completely commodified, and the gear industry has just followed, but I'm not 100% on that, it's just my hypothesis ?
