You may think both tones are shit but that's not the point. In a lot of artistic creations whether it be film, paintings, cooking, music etc ..... contrast is a great tool. I think he makes a very good point that we often overlook in chasing our tails for the holy grail tone.

Link?

maybe he means a shit tone is the absence of tone...or in this case, oh never mind

listen to any of the isolated guitar tracks from 70's and 80's on youtube. A lot of them sound like ass but great in a recording. That is my interpretation of what he said here.

Everyones idea of shit tone or good tone is different. Like for example, I think Dimebag's tone in Pantera was great, but there are a lot of people that don't like it. I couldn't imagine him playing a more typical marshall type of guitar tone on "Vulgar Display Of Power" that would have sounded pretty lame in the context of their music. With an aggressive and abrasive album like that... the tone should be just as aggressive and insane sounding.

Exactly. Listen to how ungodly bright EVH's iso guitar tracks are, esp his lead work. But they are perfect in the mix.

When I was younger I HATED his early tone. It literally hurt my ears.

Many peoples idea of great tone is one we have all heard before. It's popular for a reason.

It's much harder to find your own tone, one that always works for you in your situation. One that can define you. And in most cases, other will not like it at all. The love/hate of dimebags tone is a prime example.

And using an obnoxious tone to highlight a passage, or make a song stand out, is awesome.

Sorry guys. Fixed the link.

I've used those before, but I never thought of using a wah post dirt for it. I usually use an EQ to cut out the top/bottom end to make it sort of AM radio sounding.
