So I have been on a budget amp kick ever since I saw the guy from Battery (Metallica Tribute Band) using a crate stealth 100 watt on a Peavey 5150 cab and some pedals getting Hetfields live tone with ease I was amazed. This was the first time I had noticed someone using an amp that didn't say Mesa or Marshall on it and realized tone doesn't have a price tag build quality does lol. So I have tried the Crate Stealth love it was too marshall mid heavy and it hated my Mesa Cab so I sold it. Now I have a chance to get a Peavey ultra plus another budget sleeper amp that doesn't say crate on it with 6l6 rather then the EL34s in the Stealth. What say ye should I go for it or hold back for a while and see what else pops up? I know the whole Ultra plus, xxx, jsx, 3120, xxx2 order but the Ultra plus is the chepest coolest and acording to what I have read on the forum the best sounding of the triple x peavey stuff. Opinions and thouts please

After 30+ years playing through all kinds of mid and high end amps I'm using a Peavey 6505+. Why? Because it sounds absolutely fantastic. I got it NOS for $650.
Run it through a Mesa cab. Maxon boost. A little TC delay and the tone kills.
Using it with my pop/rock trio and its huge.

I know this isn't news as so many guys have used them, but it's new to me because I've been using High dollar amps and I'm amazed at how good a relatively inexpensive amp sounds.

Anyway, highly recommended.

You should find a 50 watt Stealth. They run 6V6 tubes(4) and it sounds more metal than the EL34. I had it dialed in almost to a Sykes tone(Whitesnake) with the mids scooped. It still has the mid honk but you can eq it out. It is a better sounding amp than the 34 version....and I swear just as loud. Yeah they are underrated! I'm tempted to grab the one in mpls......200 bucks....lol

The Ultra + is awesome at any price, but especially at the going rates. A cheap eq pedal in the loop to drop the 400 would give you even more metal options.

I'd love to pick up a solid state XXL head. They can be had super cheap ($300ish). I had one about 10 years ago and it sounded amazing for what it was, and very versatile.

I love the Triple Rec but since I picked up the Peavey it's all I use. I like the immediacy of the attack. The loop is better than the Mesa as well. I like the cleans and crunch on channel one better than the Mesa.
So........I traded the Triple for a Splawn Quickrod! I wanted a nice Marshall with a stellar loop. The Splawn is great too, but I still grab the 6505+ for rehearsals and gigs. I'll work the Splawn in as well, but I'm really loving everything about the Peavey.

My band mates have also commented on how this is my best tone ever. And those guys have seen me go through at least a dozen amps. They LOVE the Peavey. So clear, punchy and articulate.

Anyway, you can see I'm a fan.

I had a great run with a 1st series 5150 in the 90's. Was an awesome plug straight in rock/metal machine. Wouldn't mind getting another one one day for fun, but I know my tastes have moved away from it for my main sound.

The VTM60 was my main amp for several years. Great, versatile single channel monster. Sold it when I got my Deliverance (which I have since traded).

My 5150 block letter fuckin rips ass. I got it for $250. It was missing the front grill and needed a little maintenance. An hour and a half later, it was rippin. Not just the brootz either. Use the crunch channel and turn down the gain, you can get a great classic rock tone. On that setting you can get a decent clean by using the volume knob. Not crystal cleans though. But hell I probably use a crystal clean 1% of the time. Lots of people say it's a one trick pony. But I found that you can get lots of different tones out of that amp using different guitars, pickups and your volume knob. I was shocked at how versitile it really was just because most people say it isn't. I guess it was kind of like going to a movie and thinking up front it wasn't going to be that good. And then it was good, which made it that much better.
