Those that are reamping practitioners, what is your setup/process?

I am looking into using my AxeFx III to facilitate this process, but perhaps a neve di/radial box setup is better?

The AxeFx III works great and has more routing options. I’ve tried DI boxes and it’s just so much simpler on the Axe and the sound was no ‘better”.

Have a particular method you prefer with the axe? I’ve seen a few that seem to use the digital puts/in and others with a combo?

I've only done it with a Radial box and real amps. I'm not sure if you can use it as an interface itself to reamp. I've recorded direct with the HX Stomp, and it would be cool if you could reamp direct with it. Really, if you get the DI and reamp box, you can reamp with anything.

Outputs 3 and 4 were made for reamping.

So I come out of my DAW and route that out Output 3 then hit the pedalboard-amp-suhrRL-AxeFx back to DAW.

Basically this:
  • Reamping Setup:

    • Create a DI track:
I record 2 tracks simultaneously, one with output 1 from my Axefx so I can hear a live sound when recording and 1 from the dedicated DI out usb from the Axefx.

Route the reamp signal: Set the output of the DI track to the AxeFx usb Input on the AxeFx. In the Axe-FX, route the input (where you're sending the DI track) to your desired amp/effect model (if using axefx) or to output 3 or 4 to hit external gear. Then back into the AxeFx or however you get the signal back to your DAW

    • Create a reamp track: Create a new track in your DAW to record the ramped version

    • Record the reamp: Record the reamp track in your DAW, adjusting the Axe-FX settings to achieve your desired sound.

NRC is in the know for some of what goes on in my dark basement

Check out this video if you are trying to reamp with a Fractal product. I'd also recommend Fractal's blue jacketed cable for this process which is what I use.

This guy explains it nicely so I don't have to:

Me reamping a solo from a decade ago:

(this is what it sounded like without my phone mic)

For shits and grins, this was the original, before the hair was going gray and thru the Avid Eleven Rack
Guitar was built from a korina back / myrtlewood top / maple neck and ebony board

Now we're not talking about reamping unless we're talking about how cool it can be to resurrect something from the eleven rack days and being able to pump it thru a killer tube amp (once I could afford one again)

Pretty easy with a standard DI and a Lehle in my experience but I never had the epic rack setups or anything like others here.

Happened to use the AES input/output or the other xlr output?

I tend to use my axe as my front end in a 4CM and then into a KHE amp/cab/fx switching system so I dont really want to disturb that too much if possible…

Can't answer that unfortunately.

I use mine differently than most.

If using the front input, it's fairly normal modeling and captures DI via USB5.

In the rear I use inputs 1 for PLIR and 2 for the OX, so I can't capture DI while doing this. I have output 3 feeding my analog via one of Fractals blue cables. Then I have a 'note' to myself on scene 1 to remind myself extra steps since I don't do this every day and I can forget.

Screens below for reamp:

Here is my preset for recording or playing amps or IR-X, and have different delays / verbs etc on different scenes. (You'll note there are no amp blocks)
Side note: If I put a 12" cab on my desk and feed that with the OX, it's a compact form of W/D/W by doing this:

Bit of a tangent though that's how I've used my AxeIII as an interface that supports killer effects and tube amps.

I track with Neural DSP plugins to get solid takes, then output the DI to a Signal Arts Angry Reamp box, into amp/cab/mics/preamp/interface. Make sure to use the "record delay compensation" or similar latency compensation in your DAW to avoid latency and phase issues.

What are you using for your initial input? DI box?
