So lately I've been getting into experimenting with different sounds and effects as I'm moving away from playing metal since buying my amp (a 5150 II, ironic, no?)

I'm currently using a Marshall delay pedal that I borrowed off my friend ages ago, he hasn't asked for it back. :S Anyway it's not great although it does have 7 modes which is nice.

I'm not really into boutique pedals and I'd rather not spend a massive amount of money on pedals. All of my pedals are Boss/Dunlop so in that price range so I'd maybe be looking at MXR.

Same goes for the Flanger, I see lots of guys using the Boss Flanger, how is it? I've never used a Flanger before properly by the way.

Thanks

Torquil.

I've been rocking the MXR Carbon Copy for a couple years now. It's the only delay pedal I've ever been 100% happy with. Sounds great in front or through the loop. As for a flanger, I recently got the EVH Flanger and it's awesome. I was skeptical at first but it really is a great sounding flanger, plenty of control and just sounds great.

+1 on the EVH flanger - they sound great and do what they are supposed to.

do not recommend the boss flanger, boss uses SS buffers in their circuits and you will get tone robbing unless you install a true bypass switch.

as far as delay's go, only rack effects have given me the delays that i like so far, cant really recommend anything in your price range and my experience.

Another vote for the EVH flanger from me. The Carbon Copy is a good delay also, but for that same price you could get the Malekko 616. Check that one out.

The 616 is awseome. GASSIN for one myself. The cabron copy is decent too. Also look at the EH Memory Boy and Memory Toy.

For a flanger, if you can solder, the BYOC flanger kit is amazing.

I bought the EVH flanger just because it looked cool and I am a VH fanboy. I really like it alot. I have tried Boss and a few others, but one that really stood out was a flanger made by Hartman pedals. Overall probably my favorite flanger.

Delays, I really like the Time Factor. It is very versatile. It can be used line or inst. level. There is a kill dry for 100% wet. It is midi and the delays just sound damn good. I really love the ducking delay. Now, I have never tried it in front of an amp, so I cannot comment on that. I use mine in a loop with a mini mix by Suhr and the TF with kill dry on. It even sounds good without a mixer.

Hmm all good looking suggestsions, but if I can pick up a Boss flanger used for like £30 I will. :P

Carbon copy looks cool.. I'm looking for more quick delays to add to solo runs and kinda blured effect with solos and ambient stuff, not the kinda slap sounding echo. Should I be looking at analogue? Keep in mind I mainly play metal. :P

I tried out the Memory Toy alongside the Carbon Copy and thought it was just awful. I can't put my finger on what was wrong about it, but it just wasn't RIGHT.

Probably not what you're looking for, but for about the price of two botique pedals you could get a Line 6 M9 and have all the delay, filter and modulation you'd want. Just a suggestion.

You didnt have the modulation on did you? The modulation on those 2 (especially the Toy) is worthless

I think it was on. Maybe that's why I liked the Carbon Copy better. It was a real bummer because the price on the Toy is awesome...

I don't have any experience with them, but I saw a YouTube video of the new Blackstar pedals - Delay, Reverb and Modulation. They look incredible.

Do yourself a favor and check out the Ibanez AF-2 Paul Gilbert Flanger before you make your mind up :)

Heres my BYOC. dont have any clips. This Flanger can do anything.

Oh man, I'm such a flanger whore.

If you want to go vintage I think the Ibanez FL-9 is a my favorite flanger of the "golden age" (I like it better than my MXR or the ADA I sold) and the prices aren't as nuts as the other two. It's a different sort of flange than the in your face MXR style, but I prefer it. It doesn't overwhelm the sound but it can still get very intense.

The new Ibanez FL-9 is okay, but the Paul Gilbert flanger is really nice. If it didn't have the "takeoff" mode (not something I need or would ever use) and the unnecessary extra size that came with it I'd own one for sure. I don't feel Maxon's new flangers are worth the price, but they are quite nice.

I've never like the boss school of flanging, which isn't to say it's bad, it's just not my cup of tea, so I can't really recommend them or speak much of their highlights.

MXR's stuff is kind of the standard for flangers. I'm a huge VH fan but I don't think the VH flanger is worth the price, all you get is a knob that instantly calls up the unchained sound, but you could just as easily dial that in on a regular gray flanger. I guess having two "presets" (the VH knob and whatever you actually dial the knobs to) is neat, but I tend to be more set it and forget it with effects. People say that the new MXR stuff doesn't sound as good as the 70s stuf and i guess I have to agree on some level (I also own a '78 original like someone else above was talking about) but one thing that those people never mention is the absolutely bat shit insane noise floor of the old MXR flangers. This is the main reason that my old MXR is not on my pedalboard, it's just way too noisy.

I'm currently using a new pedal that just cam out from Jaques stompboxes called the the Kapellmeister Flanger. It's small (Phase 90 size) and sound like a cross between the FL-9 and the MXR. It has a depth control that works very well to get you anything from subtle "almost chorus" to unchained type intensity (it doesn't sweep like an MXR so it will never sound just like unchained, just using that as an example of how in your face it can get). I've tried pretty much every flanger (with a few exceptions such as the paradox TZF or flanger hoax) and the kapellmeister is what's currently on my board. It's also not as pricey as you'd expect, mine was about 130 dollars shipped.

Good luck finding the right pedal and happy flanging.

You really can't go wrong with the Digitech Hardwire DL-8. It's a great sounding pedal, and I'd still have one if it weren't for me being short of cash recently and having to part with something. It's flexible, with multiple digital settings, then the reverse, modulated, analog, slap-back, lofi, tape, and loop settings to boot.

My favorite trick with it was to have my stereo trem on, and the stereo reverse delay setting on the hardwire, with the signal split between my two amps.
