Why do a lot of modern fuzzes sound like an auto-wah or an envelope follower or something like that?

There is like a squelchy touch-sensitive sound to them. At least from what I can hear on the Proguitarshop demos. It's very evident in the Torn's Peaker demo. I can't think of any other way to describe it other than squelchy.

You might be hearing the compression on the recording that happens when the volume increases as the effect being demo'd is turned on. It isn't necessarily from the pedal itself.

Here's an update, just watched the PGS demo for the 'Hoof' and I love it too. Right up there with the Musket, top two so far. Anybody know what the 'Texture' knob on the Devi-Ever Torn's Peaker does? Circuit wise I mean.

You may also want to check out the Twosome by Blackout. It has their Musket and Fix'd fuzz together in the same pedal. Kinda pricey, but if I didn't already have a separate Musket I'd pick one of those up. Save some board space and gives you a huge variety of tones.

I really want a Devi Ever Hyperion myself.....

That's what I was thinking last night when I was doing my research, I kept going back and watching that demo. It seems to be what I am looking for and goddamn that price looks good too. I'd say it's number 3 on my current list, but I am still looking every day, so things always change. Not as 'intricate' as come of the other fuzz options out there, but the simplicity of the thing seems nice. Anybody know what the 'Control' knob's function in the circuit does?

Isn't the Fix'd fuzz like having two fuzz boxes in one as it is?  That's total madness.

Just discovered the DE - Karaoke Party Fuzz, seems really cool too.

The hyperion does sound very good, I believe the control knob adjusts the gain.

Seems like more than just a simple gain control. I have a hunch that it controls the voltage bias of one/more than one of the gain stages, but I'm not sure on that hunch.

:D Why do you think I'm jonesin for one?!? IIRC the custom pedal that turned into the Twosome could run both fuzzes at the same time. Talk about crazy!

Yeah it does. The intro starting at 5 seconds is an awesome doom tone.
I want.

Total Hyperion GAS. Not next paycheck, but maybe the following one, I might grab it unless something else comes up. It's just so cheap and sounds so good! Don't think I can pass this up, especially since I've written a few doom projects lately.

I LOVE the Candlemass sound!!

I've read that the Bluebeard Fuzz is awesome for doom fuzz. Also the Boss FZ-2 which a pretty key unit for doom tones.

I've got a custom fuzz pedal but haven't tried it lately for doom metal fuzz tones. It gets really "congested" and sputtery-sounding, very "choked" if you try to smash out heavy thrash palm-muted power chords, but it sounds awesome on single notes especially higher up the fretboard. Has this cool oscillation too when you make weird chord shapes. I need to do a clip of it someday....

How does the Bluebeard compare to a BMP?

whats a BMP?

for the record bluebeards are fucking AWESOME. i rattled a 4x12 off another 4x12 the first night i got it.

theyre hard to come by but theyre totally fucking worth it. also the great destroyer from dwarfcraft devices is fucking boss also. and the shiva.
