Recommend me a multi-FX unit

I've been thinking about picking up something along the lines of a multi-fx unit. I had a G-Major for a very, very small amount of time but I couldn't even actually get it to make a sound. So I don't know what it's really like.

What would you guys recommend? I'd rather not break the bank if I can help it and I'd like to avoid having to buy a poweramp or something like that. I'm looking for minimal tone stuck, obviously. I generally use delays and reverbs, some choruses and a bit of flange. I'd also LOVE to be able to dial in a tone/reverb combo to thicken up my rhythm sound.

Presumably you''re running the unit with a pre/poweramp head?

Having been down the G-Major route myself, briefly, & used a barrage of atrocious multi-FX in my youth, there are really only a few digital units that I would trust with a valve amplifier nowadays. All of which would break the bank.

As far as budget multi FX go, I would honestly look at building a cluster of quality stomp FX. You will spend money, over time, but you'll have some single-purpose FX that always sound awesome with your (presumably) valve amplifier.

Plus, building a pedal board is fun. You get to know the pedals intimately while you save for the next one. Some of that magic is lost when you have a unit that does everything straight outta the box.

However, the G-Major 2 is probably not a bad shout if you have your heart set on a digital FX unit. You'll just need to spend some time setting it up. It needs to be run in the series loop of your amplifier, not out front, & there's a little work in getting i/o & patch levels correct.

for that kind of use on a budget i'd suggest looking into a rocktron intellifex

can be found pretty cheap on ebay, works well and does the job nicely , no tone suck either , analog dry through (just have to set HUSH to pre-hush) , great units for the money

I'd have to highly recommend the "TC G-Force w/Artist Card". Did I say I have one for sale? Sounds great, more programmable that the G-Major, and no preamp sounds, fx (reverb/delay/etc.) only.

The TC multieffects are getting quite old, not that it sounds bad, but it could have a little refresh. It hoped for the NAMM without any result, let's cross fingers for the Musikmesse. I would really like a G-Major 3 with good converters and eventually 4CM mode.

I have always used and a ben a huge fan of the rocktron Intellifex - been really good and trasparant.

Really can't go wrong with the Rocktron Intellifex or find a Replifex on ebay!!

Forgive my ignorance, but I need a poweramp to run the G-Major?

I'm in a similar situation, would an eleven rack be another alternative?

The G-Major is just an FX unit. It doesn't make any noise unless you run a signal into it & out into a power amplifier, or in the FX loop of an amp head which runs out of the pre-amp, into the FX unit & out through the power section.

Oh, yeah. I thought I mentioned in my post that I'd be running it through the FX loop of my Mesa. I'm not THAT big of a noob

Zoom G5 is well priced,I don't notice any tone suck in the loop of a Splawn or Mesa. With all the effects off and volume equal I cant tell a difference when it in the loop or out. I can't say the same for any other multifx I tried. I have effects only patches set up for running in the loop and then I have effects with amp models set up for just jamming through monitors or headphones. If you want amp switching or 4CM look elsewhere.

I've had many FX units and liked the G5 most of all. Like BrokenFusion says, if you want 4CM or amp switching, it doesn't do that at all but it sounds great and is really simple to use. I sorta regret having just traded mine off but it was way more than I needed and I replaced it with the less G3X so all is not lost.

I definitely don't need channel switching or anything. I hadn't considered the Rocktron Intellifex but I'll hunt around for one and see what they're going for.

How do we feel about the Rocktron Xpression?

+1 on intellifx great unit and new they cost over a grand I believe and they don't tone suck. I love a zoom 9030 also. Harder to find though.

Do you want a rack mount unit or fx and controller in one unit?Do you have a floor controller?. Xpression is OK but unless you have a rack full of stuff already it's a pain to carry around a rack with one or two things in it and then you need a floor controller, cable ect. The all in one floor units are pretty popular for that reason

It doesn't matter, it'll never leave my house. I don't have to worry about gigging or anything. A floor unit would be preferred but I'm not picky.

For your house Zoom Multistomp series is hard to beat for the price. Most of the G5/G3 effects and models jammed into one pedal for about $100. The new one you can buy new effects from their store and load them to the pedal via bluetooth.
