UPDATE: I've decided to go with a firewire based setup. Going with either a Saffire 24 or 40.

Also check out the presonus stuff. It will come with Studio One Artist, which is a great program. Unlimited track count, and really easy to use. One of the AudioBox VSL units would be a great choice.

I use the PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL for travel. I haven't looked back since I started using PreSonus. I never have any issues with it, it has midi, 1/4, xlr.

Focusrite has a lot of good stuff.

I've sifted through a handful of low-end interface over the past couple years, and the Saffire Pro 40 has me the most satisfied for the price. It has everything you'd need and then some, with Focusrite preamps too, which are considered some of the best for "low-end" interfaces. I bought mine for 300 on eBay used but still in the original packaging. It's great and sounds much better than the low-end PreSonus stuff, and I like it more than the 003 and Steinberger which cost much more. 8 inputs might seem like too many, but at that price range the 2-4 preamp interfaces are about the same quality with less features, so going for 8 channels gets the most bang for your buck, IMO.

Apogee is about to drop an amazing unit in the next month....it will be worth the wait.
Is it something low-end, or expensive like most Apogee gear? I saw something awhile back about them incorporating Thunderbolt into the Symphony, so is it that or something similar?

Thanks for all the input guys. I have it down to a few, a MOTU, the Presonus 22VSL, the Focusrite saffire pro 6 (might get the 40 if it supports USB). I might wait a bit for the Apogee to release before making a decision, thanks for the heads up Rezamatix.

This all the way.

I have a Liquid Saffire 56 and an OctoPre MKii. I've owned a Mackie 1640, Muto 828MKii, PreSonus DigiMax LT and the Focusrite just sounds so much better. Cleaner, clearer, fuller. I just hate the drives for Windows7. They just don't get a long. The Mackie Onxy was almost as good but didn't sound as full, it lacked a little.

I would stay away from Presonus, only based on my experiences.

A friend of mine has the Saffire Pro 40 and loves it.

I love me my M-Audio Profire 610, it's got everything I need

but what I would really recommend is firewire over USB. USB has waaay too much latency if you're serious about recording. Certainly worth it to invest in a firewire PCI card for your interface

maybe I was using the wrong driver, but I had a USB 2.0 interface and I experienced quite a bit, especially adding direct monitoring to it

I've had the USB vs. fireface discussion with my friend and have read a ton of stuff online, and I'm pretty convinced that USB will be OK for my needs, especially considering my budget. If not then I will probably learn this lesson the hard way. BTW, I think I will be running Vista or Windows 7, I have a couple computers to choose from (2011 Laptop or 2008 Desktop). I would love to have the Pro 40 but it's firewire only.

USB sucks for recording. period.

Why is this so? I've read a bit of both side online, but nobody has ever agreed on the explanation AFAIK. I know USB 1.0 would be way bad, but USB 2.0 supposedly has the same speed as one the firewire versions. How much is a firewire PCI card? I have room to install one on the desktop if need be.

If you're going to be doing a few guitar tracks, USB 2.0 is fine. I think it's supposed to become a problem with larger track counts. I always use FireWire myself, I didn't notice you mentioned USB only, which the Saffire Pro 40 doesn't have unfortunately.

I can't really say anything else, but it's going to be a gamechanger. I'm probably going to sell my Ensemble and get this.

Oh, reeeeeaalllyy... Damn good to know.

Thanks, Rez

If the PCI card is cheap enough, the PRO 40 still might be within reach. I have about $275 right now, and could save a little longer if it meant I would experience less grief later on. Anyone have a recommendation for a firewire PCI card?
