Recommend me Delay, Reverb + possible loop mod (JCA100H)

It's my 18th Birthday in two weeks and for a gift I'm asking for money to improve my pedalboard/rig since I'm now playing with a band reguarly and would like to expand my tonal possibilities.

I'm looking at a Delay, a reverb and possibly another delay. I like the idea of having a digital delay and an analogue or a long and short delay in different stompboxes.

I also like the possibility of having a reverb, I don't mind if one of the delays is in the same box as the reverb, i.e the Boss Reverb/Delay.

I've been looking at the Boss DDs, (I may well end up with a Boss DD, no idea which though) the Hardwire series stuff, TC electronic pedals..

Unfortunately my amp(JCA100H)'s loop is designed to work with rack gear and I know it's not suitable to be used with a lot of pedals out there. I have no idea how much it would cost to mod the loop but I would be willing to have my tech do that if necessary. I don't see myself using rack gear.. ever really.

What would you guys recommend?

Cheers,

Tawlks.

DD-7 and the dual pedal DD-20 can both be controlled with the same tap tempo pedal, just split the output of an FS-5U to both.

The DD-7 works ok through the loop of my Mesa.

I am partial to the holy grail reverbs from EH. Simple 2 controls. A mix knob and a 3 way switch for selecting between spring, hall, and flurb. (flanging reverb)

Eventides Space reverb is worth looking at too, but is expensive.

The TC Electronic Nova Delay has 2discreet delay channels and some dual delay settings too.

Strymon has a delay coming soon as well!

Whew!
Hope this helps.

Thanks man.

Does the DD-20 have easily switchable presets? That would be idea, I can't imagine I'd be using two types of delay at the same time often.

Do any of them have a reverb/delay function for post rock/ambient stuff?

The DD-20 uses the 2nd pedal for 2 different functions (you can set it to do one or the other). it either switches between 4 presets or controls tap tempo. as previously mentioned you can also get an external switch to use for tap tempo and then use the 2nd switch on the dd-20 to control presets.

I had a dd-20 and sold it cause of 2 reasons....one, it takes up a lot of room on my board. two, it does so much shit, that there was no way I was going to use it to its fullest potential.

my 2 cents: the digitech hardwire reverb is like a set of double d's on a 110lb broad. The lexicon chip in it sounds amazing. secondly, I opted for an analog delay (mxr carbon copy but there are a couple other good ones out there) because I wasn't using the delay as like a front running effect but more like an ambient kind of thing. I keep the mix knob around 10 o'clock so its not over the top.

good luck in your tone quest. it is a neverending quest lol.

Thanks for the info. :)

I really like the idea of having a preset switch. Unfortunately, like you I probably won't want to use it to it's full potential, luckily I did hear that it works with line level loops like the one in my JCA.

I probably won't need more than four presets. I do quite like the simplicity of the TC Flashback and the DD-20 is quite pricey. I may end up just buying a DD-3 and a DD-7 or something.

I like the carbon copy but I don't feel like I can justify spending that much (they're quite expensive in the UK) on an analogue delay with not much versatility.

also: Check out the tech21 boost DLA. its a digital signal, however it has a flutter knob so when turned up it sounds like an analog pedal. it also has options for triplets and trails. plus it has a tap tempo. they're just under $200 american.

I agree above completely. Save some space though, and money, look at the TC Nova Delay. I think in your situation, it will fit in one pedal what you need. Also, I know Line6 is a dirty word around here, but if you have a good amp, look into the M series pedals. the M5 that just came out, gives you 100+ effects that you can use one at a time, and is programmable. It may be the swiss army knife you are looking for.

I have a Mesa with a line level loop, and I am able to use a CE-5, DD-7 and Holy Grail in my loop with no problems. Experimentation is the key. Enjoy!

I'm actually using the JCA100H with a BOSS GT-8 and the 4CM and it's working great. Even using the GT-8 Amp Control to switch the channels on the JCA. Good stuff...

Not sure if it's line level but the Hughes & Kettner Replex is a nice tube driven Reverb and 2 delay setting unit (long and short). I had one for a while and ran it through a Marshall 6100LM and it sounded great. Guitar Center has a used 1 for $300 which is a great price on that unit.

mxr carbon copy is the best delay pedal i've ever owned. you can find em new on ebay for like $110.

I currently own the MXR carbon copy and love it. Also used to have the TC electronic nova delay and thought it was a great digital delay pedal. Have heard good things about the Strymon pedals and have heard people play (in person) the Eventide timefactor (delay) and Space (reverb) pedals and have to give them a nice thumbs up for their sound quality. The standard for reverb however is the EH Holy grail pedal which is simple but sounds great for what it is.

the TC nova repeater might be a good idea, cheaper than the nova delay if you don't mind losing the screen, it's probably one of the best bang for you buck delay pedals with tap tempo on it

or the line6 echo park, tonecore series pedals as pretty intuitive

+1 on the digitech hardwire reverb, great pedal

i personally wouldn't look into the m5 but rather save some extra money and buy a used M9 , tbh i'd buy all those pedals used, chances are you might be upgrading in a few years or whatever

if you're looking to really splash out on a delay, the strymon stuff is fantastic, i got a brigadier a few weeks ago, simply amazing, the eventide stuff looks great as well, but takes up a lot more room on the board and the price is way up there

good luck ;) i'm building up a new pedalboard specifically for multi channel amps with effects loops, gonna take me a while to build it all up

the Eventide is less expensive than the new strymon, and is one of the DEEPEST pedals you will find.

If you like tweaking it is AMAZING. if not, you will throw it out the window. (my buddy has the modulation eventide... I can get lost in there)
