Hey fellas... I normally don't do things like this...as I'm a pretty simple kinda "gear" person as for as customization goes... but I'm growing tired of the Dragon II's in my custom 22... I've had this guitar for quite awhile and just want to try something new...

I play heavier music... from metal to heavy rock... but a really great clean tone from the bridge pickups is an absolute MUST... the guitar is mahogany body and neck with a thick maple top, rosewood fretboard...

I like a tight bottom end, but not SUPER precision tight... a decent midrange but not honky... and nice balanced highs... nothing harsh... and I also SUCK at describing tones I like LoL...

....annnddddd GO....

I'm in on this one as I have a 96 Custom 22 and while the Dragon 1s are cool pickups, they lack the power that my Tremonti. That and I think I've got the BKP bug myself...

This is kind of a philosophy thing, but given your amps I don't think you really need to go for high output.

I have a VHII in the bridge position of my Jackson. Part of the reason for that was due to me wanting the Mothers Milks for my neck and middle. With the VHII tapped, I get some pretty good cleans out of the bridge too, but it's not a jazzy clean... more Strat quacky.

Honestly, you're going to get the best response from Tim at BKP himself. I told him what I was looking for (by the way, be more specific about this... if it's versatility within heavy, say so, or otherwise give examples from more well known bands). I've seen a lot of other people ask him directly and he seems to always have the best advice for it.

Thanks for the reply brother... I've always been pointed in Tims direction... just never contacted him... I suppose it's worth mentioning I use the Axe FX II exclusively with a Matrix power amp... I just haven't updated my sig...

It's funny you mentioned not needing high output... I think I tend to like medium output pickups... but then again I've never really tried a GREAT high output pup... I had some war pigs that came in a custom guitar but they were a horrible choice for the guitar so I got rid of them... in retrospect I really wish I would have kept them...

prs + riff raff = tone heaven
had it in a '96 mccarty
bet the mule would sound even better, but a bit less clear on heavier palm muted stuff
the mule is the most organic bridge pickup I ever played

my bandmate uses a miracle man in a mccarty and his tone is amazing, even for cleans, when he rolls the volume down
he uses a single channel vh4 (ch 3) based preamp pedal and the miracle man cleans up really well with it
he also had the cold sweat and the tremonti in the same guitar
the tremonti was a little more aggressive and midrangy, but the BKP's are a lot clearer

the vh4 is known for sounding even better with lower output models
I have another vh4 based rack preamp (mine is smoother and less high gain, though, more like a shiva) and the riff raff in my '73 lp custom sounds really good with a booster in the front of the preamp
with my friends preamp pedal, which is more saturated like the real deal vh4, it doesn't require a booster at all
just pure fat and middy sustain, despite of being low output

I use BK's in all my PRS. I use Mules and VHII's. The mules are very vintage as you would expect and I really like the mids and top end on the VHII's.

Cheers Rich

I use VHIIs in the bridge too. When I had my Modern Eagles I put those in all of them. :)

didn't try the vhII in a prs, but in one of my les pauls, I actually like the neck vhII in the bridge position better than the actual bridge model
sounds pretty close to the riff raff (and it's supposedly the same as an alnico 5 mule)
the bridge version is punchier, but a little more scooped and dry (not in a bad way at all)
reminds me of the nailbomb, but without the compressed low mids, a lot more open and a bit tighter sounding

I'd look into Rebel Yells. I had a set in my Standard 24 and they sounded awesome. Hot, but not overpowering. I think they are around 14k.

Holy Divers. Trust me. I play a fake doctor for real, for pretend on TV.

Lemme know if you want to off the D1's, been looking for some.

On topic: I had a set of Painkillers in my CU24 that were pretty bad ass for heavier things, and still cleaned up well. And yes, as already suggested above, shoot Tim an email, super cool guy.

This was the first and only BKP that came to mind when I read construction of the guitar, style and your description of what you're looking for.

If you want a touch hotter, the Rebel Yells. But as previously mentioned, the need for higher output pups isn't necessary with the gain levels of most amps today.

Good luck

It's a toughie for me, as the D1s were the pickups that hooked me on PRS in the first place. My wife might kill me as it's her favorite guitar.

Listen to Uncle Mo, he knows his BKP's. I am really impressed with my Nailbombs and Blackhawks. I'd like to try the Black Dogs one day.

Email Tim at Bare Knuckles. I described the inherent tone from my guitar, amp I was using, what I liked and didn't like about the sound I was getting, and he nailed it with his suggestion.
