looking for some dimarzio pickups for my wolfgang. i play hard rock/numetal type stuff ... along the lines of sevendust, slipknot, mudvayne type stuff. those bands are just to give an idea of my style of music. contemplating the tone zone/evolution set, or crunchlab/liquifire set ... and have also looked at the super distortion but am unsure what neck pickup i would wanna run with it. any other ideas feel free to mention them. i am looking to stay with dimarzio's since they seem to be the only thing that is a direct bolt in for the wolfgang guitar.

PAF PRO was my favorite neck pickup by DM. The SD was muddy as hell under gain. Really not a fan of DM pickups anymore, but I've heard from numerous reliable sources that the D-Sonic is their best pickup. You can even get different sounds based on how you orientate it. Seems cool but I've never used it myself. All of the DiMarzio's I have tried had annoying mids though, got sick of them after a while. My favorite DiMarzio pickup is the SD Distortion.

Super 3, D-Activator, Crunch Lab, or D-Activator-X in the bridge, Super 2, Liquifire, PAF PRO, D-Activator, or D-Activator-X in the neck. Take a look at the Dimarzio site and compare the EQ curves and output of each pickup and base your decision on which seems to fit in with your playing style best.

Cheers,

Can't you install active pups?

EMG's or Blackouts rule for that music....

I have been using an Evolution, Tone Zone, and now a D-Activator with an Air Norton. The Air Norton is my favorite neck PU. I have been using it for a few years. I also like the D-Activator. I will be trying out a crunch LAb as it is not as hot as the D-A.

the air norton is probably going to be the neck pickup i use. the bridge pickup i was going to go with was the tone zone, but even though the site shows it to be more focus on lows and mids, my buddy says his is extremely bright sounding which i dont want so i am still a bit skeptical on it ...

My old Tone Zone was DEFINITELY not bright...

He must have a REALLY bright guitar :aww:

i have blackouts going into my charvel actually. i would put actives into my wolfgang but i would have to route the body for slightly added height and also the actual shape of the hole to allow them to fit, which i am trying not to do unless absolutely necassary

The tone zone in the bridge and evolution in the neck of my Charvel So Cal sound awesome....great combo.
I won't be swapping.

I don't think a whole lot of people use these, but X2N's sound massive! I used one in an Ibanez for a long time now and it's always sounded clear, responsive, and thick. Previous pickups I've had always had decent clarity, but lacked the thickness I needed for high gain stuff. I've never tried it (because I suck at wiring), but you can also coil split the X2N to give you more versatility.

i have been looking at these a lot lately as well. i wanna try an x2n in the bridge and neck positions to see how it does. i want something really aggressive ....

DMZ's I love:

Evo
X2N
Super 3

Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues
36th Anniversary Paf

If you go with a Super Distortion bridge (underrated IMO), try the "Humbucker From Hell" in the neck - GREAT combination I have in one of my Custom Shop Charvels...

I picked up 2 of the combos for cheap, both were coming out of SoCal! ;)

I really like the pair and the Evo in the neck is growing on me. I would be curious to try out the Air Norton too.

Steve does the "Humbucker From Hell" sound like a single coil?
