Hi All...

I have a friend who has a son that wants a good multi-effects unit for his guitar rig. He is happy with his amp setup but wants a unit that will provide effects at a relatively low cost. They are out of my realm of knowledge,

Do any of you have any recommendations? I would really appreciate it!

A used Rocktron intellifex can be found for 1-200 and will give you pro quality effects at a nice price. Its a rack unit. Other more expensive products include the Axe fx Ax8, G systems, among others on the high end price wise. I find the Intellifex suits my needs. I run it in between a 2C+ and a Mesa Strategy 400 for a wet/dry rig.

How complex of a system is he looking for? Plug and play, or more intricate? Floor unit, or rack mounted?

I heard some sounds from the Mooer GE100 that I was digging on. It's only $100 new. Nothing fancy, but the chorus and reverb that I heard was pretty good. The newer Zoom multi-effects units are nice and relatively cheap. The G1/3/5 are nice and cheap. The Digitech RP500 is pretty great, and can be had for only $200 new.

If he wants to drop more cash, he could go with a TC Electronics G-System.

I'd recommend one of the Line 6 M series multi-effects. The M13 used is a great deal and looks nice (from a teenager's standpoint). I would not recommend going the rack route as a kid. It gets complicated and easy to lose interest. Multi-effect floorboards are easier to tweak, easier to customize, and you don't need an additional floorboard and rack case to go with them.

The M13 has 4 effects at a time, and a choice of 12 effects at your foot at any given time. Lots of effects to choose from. All of them are of reasonable (not boutique but def not terrible) quality. If/as he grows his tastes and interests, it can be used in 4CM and as a midi controller for other stuff. It's very easy to use, easy to tweak, easy to program, and isn't that expensive. Also very durable--great for a kid who wants something easy to take to and from places and is heavy footed. Add an expression pedal and you can get decent whammy, wah, and volume swell type sounds, not to mention having the expression pedal control other parameters. It has on board tap tempo and an on-board tuner as well.

I happen to have one for sale right now on Reverb. Was planning to post on the classifieds soon... PM if interested.

The TC Electronics Nova System sounds very good. I've been using one in the loop of my Ecstasy for 4 years without issue. Pretty simple to dial in.

The Line 6 M9 is more board friendly but I think the Nova sounds better...

Another vote for the TC Nova System.
You can find them used for $250.
I think they recently lowered the retail price on these units as well
if you'd rather go for a new one with a warranty.

This. If he is looking for a rack unit the Intellifex sounds great for cheap. That was my main effect unit in the 90's for years running with multiple Mesa setups as well. These are nice and transparent so they work great in series. Still have my original blackface and also an LTD. Really good bang for the buck.
