For those that have a CCV, what tube set get your rocks off? Both power and preamp. It's time for a fresh set. What's working for ya? 😎

I don't have a CCV unfortunately but wanted to chime in before everyone bashes JJs. Been putting JJ in my Splawn to experiment a bit. Their pre's are very decent for new production. Zero microphonics. Little on the dark side but great for bright maps. For power tubes try EL34 II's and EL34L's. I like both. Purchasing from Eurotubes after years of bashing that store. :dunno:

That said, I'm currently running some Chinese square getter 12AX7's I bought off of @just42dave - and really like them. He even threw in some 'candy'. Give him a shot

PS: and yes, the =C= EL34s I got from @Laura a long time ago - still work fine, and tonally similar to JJ if that is even perceptible.

Sound wise JJ are fine if you like their character. I like them in several of my amps. But I've gotten some bad ones recently. My Loyalist had new JJ power tubes in it and one shit the bed about a week after. Then I've gotten bad tubes of other brands too. So it's not like it's singularity a JJ issue

Thanks mate

I have Ei and squares still

Winged =C= will be good if you can find them. By the time the factory shut down, all they were sending out were factory 2nds. So if you find "NOS" SEDs, there's no guarantee they will be great. RFT can be good, but somewhat on the round side in the lows. For modern production tubes, JJ E34L are nice.

Those Winged Cs all have dates on them....that should protect you from buying the 'last of us' versions lol. From memory, stay away from 2011-12.....might be 2013....but thereabouts.

Where are the date stamps and are they actual dates or some sort of code? I have Winged C here and none of them have date codes as far as I can remember but I will look again.

Date codes...02 24... 24th week of 2002

The other big problem with late winged c is a lot of the tubes test high for current draw. Their EL34 was notorious for that.

For those of us that don't have a CCV, can you describe it a little? From what's written here, it's an amp. But is it a head or combo, how many watts, what speakers etc.?

I'd go for something NOS black short plates for the preamp and Tad Red Base in the power section......
I like the Winged C too but for NOS I'd go for Seamans or RFT...

**Update**
Pulled the trigger on a Quad of 2008 NOS SED's from Tube Depot. Have already loaded them in,,,gonna give them some burn time this weekend.
Thanks for the recommendations guys.
