Recording Distorted guitars

Getting a good guitar sound is more about monitoring than anything else. The biggest quality increases in the guitar sound I've gotten were when I changed something in the monitoring chain/room. As of today I'm confident I could get any sound I wanted if I could have the right circumstances & equipment for monitoring. Second important part is the room in which the amp is being recorded. As for recording chain I would be fine with an SM57 & any good quality preamp.
