Recording yourself with an Iphone

I'm trying to find the best place to put the phone when recording... does this quick clip I did sound like shit on your computer?

The set up was the phone on the floor about a foot away from the cab, kind of in between the speakers and at a slight angle. I propped the phone up using the amp footswitch. volume was like a loud tv

I thought it sounded good. I would think it would be very easy to either have it too close/far or too loud/quiet and radically change the recorded sound in and of itself. I think once you can really figure out the room and positions etc it would work plenty fine for simple stuff like clips and idea captures etc.

Two Things - 1. recording sounded decent for sure. I tried to do this recently with one of my Bogners as I haven't yet pulled out all my mics, preamps and got my DAW perfectly set up; but it sounded atrocious. Granted I had the thing pretty pinned, but that's what I was trying to get - the wide open gnarl of the amp. I reviewed my recording (staring at speaker cloth, much like yours) and it was a cackling, crackling, garbled mess. You've inspired me to try again but perhaps from a distance.

2. I've always always always wanted to open a thread titled "Hung Huy Tran has the most disturbing avatar ever" on the main forum. Every time I see that avatar, I howl with sick, weird, and borderline insane laughter. It stirs me. SO whatever the hell it is - unsure to this day and perhaps that's part of its mystique - I give kudos. Sick and weird kudos.

You have a great amp and you can play the shit out of the guitar, so I want to hear some mic'd clips !!

To answer your question, no, it does not "sound like shit," but still, I always prefer mic'd clips.

None of us here, or even the icons and rockstars we've come to know and love out there today ever picked up a guitar and were instantly awesome. They all started in the exact same place we all did. By not knowing shit - but falling in love with the guitar and falling in love with music.
