I had a GH50L for a few years and always struggled getting a sound I was 100% happy with. It was brittle, and had a rather thin lowend. The attack was sharp, but also sluggish at the same time, even with a boost. I was doing modern rock and metal tones at the time with it though, I'm sure it would sound better with a more detuned type sound.
I'd say the cab is crucial for those. Yes, they are sharp on the attack, for sure, and very Marshall in the high mids department.
However, JJ's in the preamp warm things up. I still went Tungsol in V1, but JJ's 2-4. Also, the Chinese power tubes they typically left the factory with were a key contributor as well. Many love them, I don't. Last three I had were loaded with TAD Shuguang. Brittle, brittle, brittle. For a warm amp, maybe, a bright one, no way. I either went with JJ E34L's, or KT77's. Coupled with 3 ECC83S's in the preamp, MUCH warmer. Through a Greenback cab, downright sweet. T75's, (until stupid loud), not so sweet. V30's, (depending on the cab), take your head off.
My best experience, and best tonal setup I had with the GH50L, was with a G-Flex 2x12. Those two were like best friends. I boosted it with a Zakk Wylde OD, and it was actually quite heavenly. In fact, it was a record-breaking setup for me - I kept it for 3 years!
