Redundant 4x12 cab question...give me your choices.

I've got 4 4x12's right now and 3 have to go. Or Maybe 2 stay an only one has to go. Right now the odd man out is my Splawn loaded with 2 GB's and 2 GH30's.

So should I go with the VM cabs? Lots of JVM users dig them.

What about 2 Bogners...pricey yes. Worht it? Ahh, don't know

2 EVHIII speakers...cabs look cool?

2 Stone Age cabs...best looking custom stuff around but pricey.


Thoughts please.

Check them out with your amps and keep the one that sounds great. If all of them sound better than other cabs out there then keep them all. If they don't, sell them off and get one great sounding cab...

I never heard a bad thing about the Bogner or Stone Age. I have a diezel rl 4x12, which is the same as the Bogner, and I love it.

I've heard that some 5150 cabs are supposed to be nice. I think it was Mark Cameron who was saying that along with the bogners, he liked the 5150 cabs for their tone and consistencey. Consistency is the missing link with most cabs so I'd be inclined to try some different speakers before I lose the 5150s. Just my $.02.

As far as the Randall goes, a buddy of mine has a Randall XL series and it's a really good cab. However, once you factor in shipping or tax that cab is gonna run you $1000+ new. IMO they are not worth that price though. I'd only consider one if you can get a good price on a used one and I'll tell you why. A while back someone posted a clip to compare the Bogner and Randall XL (I believe on TGP). Same speakers, amp settings, etc., and I even want to say the clip was reamped, but don't hold be to that. Suffice it to say the test was very controlled and the Bogner was noticeably "better" IMO. The Randall just didn't have the detail of the Bogner and the bogner was every bit as big sounding too. I found the same results comparing my buddies Randall XL to my Diezel too. I know better is subjective, but I'd take the Bogner/Diezel anyday over the Randall.

I sold my 2 5150 cabs....and I should have kept them. They are built solid and sounded great with all different types of speakers...except for the stock Sheffields. I still have 14 4x12s left

Geeze and I thought I had choices...oddly enough the one cab that will not ever go anywhere is my 5150...and I actually prefer the 1200 Sheffields in them. But then again...every Peavey head I've owned sounds good through so it's my main stay.

If I had the money I'd just get 2 Stone Age with 65's and be done with it but it's a 7-10 week wait...too long for me. Hell I could be dead tomorrow. I think I'm going to try the Vintage Marshall.

The JVM actually sounds really good with 75's...heck it's the only amp I've ever liked with 75's. If the VM doesn't work out I'll give the Bogs a go...or I may go back to the the Mojave...it's truly the best 4x12 I've personally ever heard.

theres a reason i have 2 5150 cabinets in the first place. and its not because im making $3,000 a week.

but, you really dont hear alot about them. so far i love them. dont get me wrong. and honestly these are the actual 5150 series not the 6505. so i would hate to ruin them by replacing speakers..

i also own them because they are built like a brick house. the hold together extremely well with no matter what i put them through. EVEN insane low-E dive bombs with the amp cranked to heaven and hell and back. no MDF boards rattling here.

its just ive never really tried any other cabinets with my head. and i know theres so much talk about blah blah blah speakers & cabs make all the difference in tone etc etc etc

and honestly im close to my tone that i like. very close, in fact i might make 1 more mod to my amp that im designing and try it without speaker changing or change speakers around as a last resort and not touch the amp. but like i said, you never know until you try.

i cant afford bogners or camerons. theres just no way. besides the point i treat my gear like like inert feeling-less objects. no road cases, and throwing them around. hauled in the bed of my truck, constantly loaded and unloaded. only things that get babied are the guitars.

dont think id have the care to baby a 130 lb bogner cabinet or even 2 if you get what i mean.

but yes, i guess ill be doing speaker testing rather than cabinet browsing. thanks for the advice

Randall cabs are great. Way better than the 5150 cabs. Can't go wrong with marshall's either though, or Mesa.

Keep your 5150 cabs with that amp...most people say the cab sucks but hey it's 11 ply birch...pretty standard fair for most cabs. It's built solid and other than the crappy Peavey casters those cabs can take a beating. I've owned about everything...and that's why I'll always have at least one 5150 cab. Actually right now I'm running my JVM with through a stock marshall and the 5150. I prefer the 5150 as it sounds bigger. But I'm a complete anal retentive when it comes to matching heads and cabs. Thats why I was thinking Bogners or Mojave or Stone Age...those are the only cabs that'd I'd want to run without the Marshall logo. Oh well...I just have cab gas...no biggie.

Bogner's are nice and use decent hardwear and grillcloth, but not really anything very special about them other than the dampening on the back panel. beleave it or not the baffle board on them is either 5/8" or 1/2", and then they do a frame grill on top of that's kindda like a front loaded cab. guess maybe the thinner baffle board doesn't matter as they sound good, and it catches more of the t-nut threads than some other cabs, but was just kindda suprised when i saw it.


i haven't seen every cab around, but for quality and price Splawn is the Cats Meow!


where you've allready had lots of cabs and like the Mojave, you may have allready answered your own question?


guess Bogner is worth a try, i just think they're a little high for what ya get. good used price would be cool.

I have a Bogner straight 4x12 that sounds pretty darn good. Right now it's loaded with H30's. Much better than my Marshall 1960A JCM 800 series cab.

Dude ive played through a lot of cabs and have owned several as well. Several Marshalls, Hughes and Kettner, Mesa boogie, Peavy, Soldano, and i must say that BY FAR the most articulate has been the Diezel rear loaded cab. Not only very clear but it handles everything you throw at it without getting flubby.

Picked up a Carvin Legacy 4-12 with front loaded V-30s for 400 bucks the other day. The guy used it 5 times and had it in storage. It's better quality and tone than the Marshall cab with V-30s I had.

We have the woodwork done by an outside company and we install the speakers and perform final assembly and test in-house.

At the moment, leadtime is 5-6 weeks max for our 4x12B.
