So I finally got around to trying the free G12M loaded cab from Redwire cab impulses.. Just had a quick run through and A/B'd live against my actual G12m RI... these impulses are pretty damn on aren't they? Now i have no experience with royer mics or any of the others besides a good ol 57 but the 57 sounded pretty faithful to my ears. I loaded them with Poulin LEcab2 so I had up to 4 mics going and I am not sure what I really liked combined because there start to be a bit of phase issues (or what i think are phase issues) but overall, this might be very interesting when mixing an impulse 421 say with a real 57. Very cool. What's everyone's experiences with these? Personally I don't think they would replace a mic but sometimes they might just be that "perfect placement" of the mic they are emulating.

They are stellar, I said this before, unless I have access to a great studio, with unlimited time for mic placement, great mic and preamp selection, I'll never bother to record with anything else than Redwirez. And that doesn't even take into account the fact that you can never have all the cabs that they offer, which are all industry standards.

That clip wasn't even recorded with a real amp and it sounds really good.... i think they sound their best when used with the line out of a load box or amp as opposed to using an axe unit or amp sim but these are such a time saver for those of us who don't have the facilities to record real amps with a variety of microphones. One thing i noticed were how the wave forms were less varied and looked very consistent with the direct recording as opposed to the mic'ed signal. So the real mic has a bit less boom and captures more nuances but still, a bit of low or high pass filter and you are in business.

I think they are fantastic!

I have the entire collection of all the Redwirez Impulses and have used them on a bunch of recordings. My favorite setting is using the Bogner V30 4x12 impulse with the Royer 121 and the Sennheiser 421 impulses. Add some reverb and a little bit of EQ to shave the extreme high and low frequencies and you're good to go!!

Do you guys use the low/high pass filters to shave some of the frequencies or do you actually use a separate EQ on the tracks?

love em as well. i also got hooked once i downloaded the marshall G12M cab. i personally love the royer 121 mic.

i use a highpass filter in the axefx to shave off anything below 60hz.

The Ownhammers are nice too. You should buy a few of those and give them a try as well. Good thing about IRs is they are cheap. :)

I use 'em on all my Axe-FX clips (including my "Romeo Delight" clip) and I find that the Basketweave impulses are just phenomenal! I bought everything they have...

Ok, so we've established they are great.. anyone want to admit they use them in place of real mics on their projects? (or in conjunction with real mics) Granted I am talking about use with real amplifiers too.

Another question for any of you guys using a hotplate or similar to do this. I noticed that when i set my hotplate to load and take the line out into my presonus firepod, I lose sound if i have the line out set to anything other than full pin. Anyone experienced that? What results is a really hot signal into my DAW and i really have to back off on the gain for that channel. Is my hotplate shot?

Hmm, I was able to clearly hear the difference between the redwire and real cab. The real cab sounds way more open and less harsh. Still these do sound good!

I use a separate EQ on the track...

If I'm using a real amp I'm using a real cab/mic.

I put in a good 2 hrs tonight messing around and my conclusion is that my real sm57 (or 2 of them paired) is still more present, tighter, than an IR but I wouldn't be against beefing up a track by adding an IR.

You mean to tell me you could seriously tell which was the real cab? I guessed the real cab along with one other one that I thought might be real too so one of the fakies had me going. I think i could see the use of these to beef up tracks but not completely replace mics.

Things I found out while using IRs with real amps, these might help some people:
1. Speaker out sounds much better than preamp out (or FX send). Don't underestimate the importance of the power section for the complete picture of your amp's sound.
2. When using the speaker out you will get a very different sound if the cab is not connected (let's say you use a resistive loadbox). This is because speakers are reactive loads that have different responses dependind on the frequency. Without the speaker connected the sound has a lot more mids and less punch, overall less natural. Redwirez has adressed this issue by providing speaker impedance IRs, you can place these in your IR processor to simulate the behaviour of the connected speaker, if you are using a dummy load. Try them, they really do work!

hey, I did a shootout between RedWirez impulses ;) check it out.

I prefer Ownhammer to the Redwire
