hey, I did a shootout between RedWirez impulses check it out.

That was kinda cool. Thanks for the post.

I've got nothing to add to this thread other than the fact that things are obviously growing way large in the sense of virtual everything. I still love my fire-breathing thumper at 3 o'clock, but I guess considering the surrounding mile radius may not like that, hey, cool to have these

In the AxeII I much prefer the Ownhammers over the RW. IMHO you should give them a shot as well.

I tried them recently for silent recording and the results were pretty good! I'm using an Aracom attenuator as the load and the line-out on the Aracom into the DAW. I haven't tried keeping a real cab connected instead of the load to see how it sounds.

What are you guys using as a load for a real amp? And for the line-out to the DAW?

I have a closed speaker box to help keep down the volume for the load, but am using an Alex Attenuator as well. I have a DI box between amp and cab and using that to kick a signal the DAW. I've also tried the line out of the Alex.

The DI has a broader frequency response, but the line out of the Alex is a bit fuller. The DI thins things a bit. It's a Countryman DI. I could try a Radial product but not sure how much better it will be.

This setup works fairly well, but it doesn't replace a real miced speaker. I am using the Two Notes plugin, which I feel sounds a little better than IRs, but even so, this solution still lacks something a miced cab has. Errr, I should say a well miced cab, which is another factor all together.

In any case, I get a fair tone and can play anytime I want to without disturbing family. That in itself is worth the shortcomings. I'll eventually try an iso cab setup of some sort, just to see. Many of those tend to have a boxy sound though, but keep the warmth of a miced speaker.

I'm using a Hotplate but I did have it set to load so that is an interesting observation about the need to leave the speakers involved. Makes me wonder though, do you set the attenuator to 0 db? If so, you don't get the bennefit of "silent" practice/recording... which is where those Impedence IR's from Redwire would be ideal. I'll look into those. Should also give Own hammer a try.

I don't think I'd utilize any IRs when using an ACTUAL amp - if I'm going to use virtuals, I'm going to keep the whole chain DDD. When I use my amps, I use my amps. The way I see things evolving for me is simple - create and tweak all the new material using the Axe-II and IRs, and when it comes to a live environment or a jam/session with my peeps, unleash the firebreathers. They may not sound exactly like the digital path taken in their creation, but whatever - work with the amps I have and do the best I can.

That clip wasn't even recorded with a real amp and it sounds really good.... i think they sound their best when used with the line out of a load box or amp as opposed to using an axe unit or amp sim but these are such a time saver for those of us who don't have the facilities to record real amps with a variety of microphones. One thing i noticed were how the wave forms were less varied and looked very consistent with the direct recording as opposed to the mic'ed signal. So the real mic has a bit less boom and captures more nuances but still, a bit of low or high pass filter and you are in business.

They definitely help with modellers to get them to play like a real amp, especially if you are used to hearing your amp through a certain speaker and mic when recording.

A really good VST to try with RedWirez is iFace. It has a graphical interface that lets you move the mic around visually and it picks the proper file based on it. Also has an EQ included. Really cool! My only gripe is that it has a bit more latency than some of the zero latency VSTs like the one RedWirez makes themselves.

I did some more testing last night using some Soldano IRs and they sounded great. I was playing late at night getting great tone and not waking anyone else up with it. I had the attenuator set to a load setting, and supposedly this one is a reactive load (rather than purely resistive) that better models a cab's impedance. I'll try comparing it to using a real cab as the load. But so far I'm happy with the results for getting a great direct-in tone.

These have allowed me to play my real amp at low volumes and find new sounds. It's much better than anything I have pulled off at home with my SM57 and cab, and there's no variation caused by me moving the mic. It also makes modelers sound a lot better. Although the real amp still sounds and feels much better than the modeler through the IRs.
