I agree with this as well, taking belt sanders and freon to a guitar will not make it sound better. The guitar was already a good one before kindergarden session.

I agree with Ratter, its just another form of finish and I happen to really like it. However, the upcharge can be a little ridiculous...

Ive been reading up on the technique and would love to attempt a project guitar that looks like it went through hell when Im done, Im talking beat to death. Like I said, you never have to worry about babying that guitar...

No...not the wear. The fact that it was made by the Fender Custom Shop, and wasn't one of the MIM or American finished guitars. Finding a good "regular" Fender is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The CS stuff like my Heavy Relic are much more consistent from guitar to guitar...as they should be. The relicing just adds to the playability IMO.

Same thing as buying a solid wood headshell for you JVM Scott. Does it sound better...? No, but it looks cool. I PERSONALLY like how the relic'd guitars look, just like you enjoy your lawyer headshell. In my thread, (see my response to Pete below) I meant that the playability is second 2 none (not to mention the setup) and this is definitely related to the fact that they are made in the Fender CS.

One other thing I just thought about... why is it usually fenders? Are there that many Gibsons that are factory relics? What about PRS, or Anderson, Suhr, etc?

Tom Murphy does most of the Gibby aging and his guitars are BIG bucks. The Bonamassa Sig LP was relicd in house by Gibson. I've never seen a relicd an Anderson or Suhr

I forgot about the Murphy's and Bonamassas, but doesn't it seem like Fender has a much higher proportion of relics vs anyone else?

Gibson has been doing 'aged' guitars for a long time, just not as drastically relic'ed as the Fender Relics. But dulled finishes and hardware are on a lot of their Historic models.

Suhr has the Antique series. This one is "medium" aged...

My headshell was only $250 though and it does not make my amp sound any better Weighes a fucking ton now though, big mistake on my part

How many guitars does the Fender CS make anyways? 3000? 4000? How the hell do they make all of these guitars in a custom shop?? The only thing I would want to improve the feel are rolled edges on the neck and that is a pretty easy thing to do on your own, did it to my 550 re-issue. The new charvels have rolled edges for $1000.

I do wish my Hamer had a thin skin cause after 5 years of playing I have done shit to the body other than some dings and rotting out the pup ring screws

Sorry but it should not cost $3000 to make a great playing guitar, that Yngwie I played had a neck pocket that was sized by Stevie Wonder

my friend has one of the first run Nash 63' strats. its not a heavy relic. rio grande pups, black, and being a first run still has the fender logo on the headstock. its absolutely the best strat i have ever played hands down. he gave it to another local strat guru and he actually thought it was a 63'. I think he paid $1250 for it around 3 years ago. they are now up to $1800 . i do love some of his basses though.
