Remastered CD vs original release: which do you prefer?

specifically looking to buy VH cds: VHI, VHII, WACF, and Fair Warning

should I go for original releases on ebay/record stores or should I just get the remastered versions?

I really liked the remastered Megadeth albums. Pearl Jam's Ten Redux was cool too, although that was remixed as well as remastered. Go with the remastered.

it really depends. most of the times remasters are nice. sometimes they are bastardizations. i have problems with remasters if i am used to the old versions.

i always though the album " shades of deep purple" should have been remastered, it is way too thin.

The VH Remasters are great. Some are just brickwalled and sound horrible

i always prefer the originals instead of the remasters... probably because I grew to like something sounding a particular way...

I usually don't care for the remasters in any case. I didn't like the Ozzy ones or the Megadeth ones, haven't really heard or at least knowingly heard any of the VH ones. I'm kinda grown to like the original sound I guess.

The VH remasters do sound really good and you can get them very cheap at places like Best Buy. Not all remasters are good, well except for anything out of Japan. I picked up most of the Dokken remasters, Blue Murder, TNT, Skid Row (Slave To The Grind), Yngwie, and a few Loudness CDs and they sound awesome. Japan knows how to remaster!!!!

The few remasters I've heard are "make it REALLY LOUD" pieces of crap, so I tend to lean towards the original versions.

I generally prefer the remastered CDs, but it just depends. On the remastered Operation Mindcrime album, I hear clipping all over the place, its very annoying. :(

i hate that. people really over-use compressors/maximizers. people for some reason are content to ruin the peaks and valleys of the waveform in recorded music. I have beef with this.

yeah this was what I was worried about

It really depends on the album. Frequently the remasters sound better than the originals since the originals were mastered for vinyl or tape...once moved into the digital realm many of them don't sound quite right. Ironically, VH is the band where I first noticed this (5150 album...the original CD sounds much worse than the record or cassette).

+1.

Remasters are ok as long as it's done right and not bricked. Not fond of the remixes though - just leave it be...

I usually prefer the originals

bought Megadeth's "Youthanasia" remaster and thought it sounded horrible, drums were given the "St. Anger" treatment, and Dave's vocals were brought up in the mix to a bad degree

I honestly don't know what he was thinking

Dug through my old CD books to find the original, which sounds HUGE in comparison
