Simply didn't have a backup. I'll get something for going direct in a pinch.
 
The tone I get from my rig is for me .most people don’t even know if you are in key or not much less that guitars are capable of different tones .so yes the only person in the crowd that cares about your tone is another guitar player .
 
To the typical non-musician, they do not notice. I could play the same riff through a shit amp, vs a really good amp, and it would make very little difference to them.

People mostly identify with hooks in music.
