i've always heard that direct floor contact leads to more thump and bass. i absolutely think this is true. i had my orange 1x12 on a raised platform playing live and it definitely took away from the bass that i could hear, and especially feel.

my cab right now has casters. seeing as i won't ever take is places (its much larger than a regular straight 4x12 as far as i can tell) should i just take the casters off? will it result in a bigger bassier tone? i would think so, but have you guys tried it?

I always play my cabs either in roadcases or on casters and notice zero loss in bass. Maybe if I was playing on an old wooden floor but certainly not on cement in my experience. The benfits of having the wheels for me far outweighs not having them at the end of the night.

Put your cab on it's side and see if you notice a difference.

It allows the cabinet to resonate through the surface it is sitting on..
It doesn't matter what the surface is but wood sounds best...
You shouldn't have to remove your casters to do this, You can just turn the cabinet on its side..
I always played out with my two 4 x12's on their sides..
I do the same thing at home..
I don't think it is something that a certain cabinet is lacking because I would do it with what ever I play through..
It is just a preference, I like the sound better that way...

+1

i dont run casters on my 4x12's. i also dont run rubber feet, just the cabinet itself.

if the surface you are on is hollow, it will actually be better to NOT do this, and run you cabinets on casters. the hollow surface will soak up your low-end. its been a nightmare for me before on a few hollow wooden stages for outside gig's.

if the surface is solid like an old church, concrete floors, wooden floors, old stages, etc then there is definately a difference that you can feel and hear.

i cant tell a difference on low volume stuff, only at moderate to loud volumes (gigs, band practice, or upper-volume practice levels for example)

try it for yourself. i dont run casters and its worth carrying my cabinets with handtrucks. ;)

I use the Auralex products underneath any cabs. I remove the casters at gigs. Not a big deal. Just tilt it up take out the casters. Sounds great!

i would do this

if UPS hadnt busted 2 of my casters in shipping... then denied my claim

the other casters i got with my cabinet the seller on ebay screwed me over and didnt include them.

so i used handtrucks. screw buying $160 just to have the same tone :)

Hand truck would be easier with stairs and certain surfaces for sure. I might think about that. ;)

What kind of amp are you using?

The best mixes I hear today the guitars are where they should be, above the bass and cutting through the cymbal wash while a good produced bass holds the bottom end.

What type of music?

6 of one way, half a dozen the other. theres advantages both ways. :scared:  :)

i believe the music is less important than the volume or venue here. its not something you can really hear "tone" wise, more than you can feel. it will become a tone thing with the punch of the low end the higher the volume you go though. it really helps to project sound persay, ala a live feeling mainly.

it can really rob you too, if a stage is hollow and you arent on casters, and/or you are playing a large enclosed area or outside you can forget about hearing yourself on stage at all. might as well point the cabinet away from you because it wont make a difference. the style of music that you play wont really help or hinder. so casters do help.. :)
