I just noticed this a few weeks ago while trying to fix my volume issue (unrelated).

When I was scaling (particularly noticable on the E scale) the amp would break up BADLY on the 3rd Octave. I can't play most chords because those notes are in their somehow.

If I turn the volume way down, it doesn't happen.
Also if I don't pick the note loud, it doesn't happen.

It's also such a bad breakup that it sends itself into a frenzy and won't stop for a few seonds until I believe the amp shuts off itself (realizing something is wrong??)

I apologize if this is a horrible description but I am a newbie obviously and I am willing to help describe it better if you need me to.

Sure sounds like tube rattle, first guess is a preamp tube. You can usually grasp the preamp tubes and feel the rattle/vibration when hitting that note, and the rattle will sometimes stop when the tube is grasped. Remove covers from the preamp tubes if you have them, and if the tubes are too hot for your hand, use a glove. Or, you could just substitute a new tube, trying it in each position, one at a time. Do not touch the output tubes, they will be very hot. My last rattling tube only rattled when I played an F sharp, most notable on 14th fret of the low E string, but still rattled on every string when I hit F sharp, and only that note. Or is it G flat?

I had a feeling it was a Preamp tube. OK, I'll check it out. I planned on ordering new AX27A tubes anyway, but since it sounds pretty good right now I'll just order a couple spares

OK, I believe this problem is solved as well. I did as suggested and when I grabbed into the ax7 tube (the 5th one I believe) it had a significant crackle. So I pulled it and the prongs were a little bent up. I assume it wasn't seating well. So I straightened them out and put it back in.

Warmed it up and hammered the heck out of the note and got no breakup or crackle. Case closed. :)

Thanks. Best website for guitar rigs on the net
