Replacing Single Pedals with Multi Effects units

So since my other thread didn't work out I'll ask in a different way.

Have any of you all switched from multiple individual pedals to a few that handle a bit more?

For instance, I have 2 MXR chorus pedals, an EHX Memory Toy delay, a TC Hall of Fame Verb.

I just acquired an Eventide H9 core. I could feel my Hof and get a few reverb algorithms. I was planning on selling off one of the MXR Chorus pedals and the Phaser and snagging a Strymon Mobius. I also have a Pigtronix Echolution Deluxe 2 (which is still in the box after getting 2 months ago).

I know I'd need a midi controller to change sounds on the fly. Just wondering how effective 3 really strong multi units would fare over 7 individual pedals.

So if I have 3 pedals that are all midi capable, do I need the GCX?

No, you shouldn't. But if your amp does not have midi channel switching (the Quickrod doesn't I'm assuming) then you could still use a GCX or RJM unit to do some amp function/channel switching.

On one of my rigs I am using the effects from a line 6 POD HD500X. I am using the 4 cable method to run some effects in front of the amp and others through the loop. I am using it mostly for effects and channel switching on my EVH 5150 III

I might use a Fender clean amp sim from the POD. It does sound better than the clean channel on my EVH.

I actually picked up a line 6 m9 fit this exact reason. Having 3 delays that I can perfectly sync tempo to and manipulate parameters simultaneously in real time with one expression controller is so useful on stage and opens a lot of doors musically

I went from a large board with 12+ pedals to a smaller Pedal train Jr. board with 5 pedals, TC Nova Drive - H9 - TC transition delay - TC Hall of Fame. The TC nova drive and H9 are controlled by a RJM Mastermind. I keep the Transition and Hall of fame on most of the time and the H9 has replaced my compressor, tremolo, phaser, flanger, tuner, octave, autowah and fuzz pedals. If I need a longer different type of delay or reverb, I'll switch the TC pedals off and will kick in a preset off the H9.

Another thing I noticed is that the clean sounds are more articulate and I think it might be because I have less wiring between my guitar and amp. I do have a buffer before the NovaDrive but it was still noticeable after I took the other pedals the H9 replaced out of the signal chain.

I had a Time factor that I used with the H9 at one point but besides having the looper function, it wasn't a huge return on investment tonally or pedalboard real estate wise. The Transition delay has a looper and it works perfectly fine for me when I need it.

I love having a big pedal board with options; just looked bad ass but the H9 with the RJM Mastermind has made things more compact, lighter and it sounds so much better.....less noise, faster attack and instant switching with the midi capabilities.

I'm also tempted in getting an H9 core and replacing the Transition and Reverb. The H9 has a modechoverb algo that is good enough to replace those pedals.

If you want to switch channels on your amp, a voodoo labs Control switcher https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ContSwitcher/ or a foot sim from sound sculpture http://www.soundsculpture.com/products/pt_footsim.htm could solve that problem without needing a rack unit.

What's your motivation for simplifying your set up? more compact, less gear, lighter, more functionality, shorter signal path?

I recently downsized to just a shure wireless, ep booster & one of those zoom mg50's. It sounds pretty decent. I don't do much switching

Motivation is all those things actually. I'd prefer to not rack the pedals but I like the idea of the shorter cables. It really started when I got my Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe. Once I saw all it offered I just felt a few midi capable pedals would be nice. It seems silly to bend down and switch verb modes manually on the HoF. Equally silly would be buyin 2 more verb pedals. I just acquired an Eventide H9 core on trade so that can be my unit for reverbs and hormony effects. I like that the Mobius allows mod effects up front or in the loop so that seems like a no brainier.

another vote for the m9, midi switching, multiple patches tons of effects...and small

+1 to this. I'm not crazy about the OD/Disto models so I still have my favs on the board in front of my amp with the M9 in the loop. Love the delays and mods.

I actually went L6 M5, able to kill off my phaser and trem pedals. They get used so infrequently and take up space, plus I was able to add some other effects that I occasionally use like rotary\leslie stuff and other crazy stuff I don't want to commit space to on the pedalboard.

Every time I have tried to go with Multi Effects units I have come, make that RUN, back to individual effects. They just sound better.

I'm pretty happy with the transition I've made to having less pedals. I did jump the gun on picking up a midi controller. I was at a music store buying the H9 and that was the best midi controller they had in stock. Disaster Area and Decibel Eleven make some cool midi controller with loop capabilities with a much smaller footprint.

I am looking for something like what you have whether it is the HD500X or GT-100. Want 4 cable and one button to change channels on amp and effects. Does the POD do that well?

Yea, not to mention turning a knob or two for a more instant gratification...I hate programming stuff... :aww:

Absolutely, I preset can change channels and have effects before the amp and/or in the loop.
