Review: Fortin Bones

Great review, I was wondering if you find the UL similar to the MAK4?, as I am thinking about getting a 2nd preamp, I currently have a VHT GP3 but like you I want something that sounds different, I suppose I'm looking for something high gain but with more saturation.

They definitely have similarities and differences.

The mids on the Mak4 are voided a little higher, so it doesn't have that nasty VHT THWACK sound that we all know and love.
The Mako has more gain and it's also more saturated, but they're both pretty tight - the Mako is even tighter than the UL preamp through the UL power section...and if you find my initial review, you'll see that I think the Mako is a little too tight for me. I've managed to loosen it up a bit by using a different power amp and an external EQ, and now it's damn near perfect.

I think the articulation on the UL is a little better, but the Mako is a little more forgiving.

The pump... followed by the dump.

No pump necessary.......I'm pretty sure they've already been pumped enough, as have a shit pile of other amps

If it gets the dziemba YouTube tones (is he a member here?) I am interested.... I wanted to buy from Kurt when he first posted it but I had no money. Then later I bought a Cali mod which I really like as well, but I hear the Bones is a little different.

The OP got to play the Bones before he traded locally for it - so he knew what he was getting. I think it was an easy way for him to dump the KR7 he's been trying to sell for awhile now and the Bones will sell alot faster. I'd have done the same thing in his shoes regardless of whether I liked the Bones or not.

Well the Bones was mine and I am the one who traded it to Alex. The KR7 was my old amp as well that we made a deal for back in the spring for his Diezel. So I knew EXACTLY what I was getting with the KR7.
In my opinion.....the Rivera IS WAAAAAAAAY UNDER RATED.
He got an amp that made him happy as well as I.
WIN/WIN all the way. And as he put it.....if its not cutting it FOR WHAT HE WANTS.......it hits the curb.


The Bones is a Bad ass......no doubt. But everyone is always looking for different areas in the TONE DEPT.
I am just a high gain Junkie.

I changed the power tubes in my Bones from all EL34 to 6550 on the outside and EL34 on the inide. Try it and you wont be getting rid of it. The amp is a beast.

That is what I ultimately decided on in my Meathead, and I could not be happier! the thing about these amps is they change character when you change tubes, almost endless tone choices!

Anyhow These amps are perfect for some and a KR7 perfect for others!
