JP has survived a couple changes and still maintained their souls. KK leaving was a bummer, but Faulkner is really good. I think if you have Tipton and Halford Priest will live on.
He's great. REALLY dig his playing!! It's great that he's being embraced as the "non-KK replacement" by JP fans. As apposed to the "HE'S NOT KK DAMMIT!!!!!! NO KK NO JP!!!!" kind of attitude... Great player who got a great gig... VERY cool!!! \m/\m/
After watching the Epitaph DVD I would definitely say you can't. K.K.'s style and the way it juxtaposed with Tipton's was one of those things that can't be replicated and it's a huge part of the Priest sound. IMO Faulkner is a very good player but sounds incredibly derivative of his influences and I don't hear him in there. Plus in that DVD he would ape Zakk's movements so much it was verging on irritating.
But in General Priest has sounded so washed out live for so long it may not matter. Way too much saturation and not enough growl and roar. I don't think I've liked their live tone since they started with the JMP-1's and if they use something else now it's no improvement.
Saw JP about a year ago with Faulkner. He's a great player but he isn't a good fit with the band. Maybe he was having an off night?? Tone wise they both sucked. EMG's into Engl amps. The highlight of the night was Thin Lizzy. Damon Johnson out-toned and out played everyone by a long shot. Les Pauls into Wizards. The tone was sick. Sick, I'm telling you.
