Chubtone, Darren this is for you! I'm not worthy!!!

Hopefully like once a week we can get a forum backing track or solo track to work with. With this kind of turn out I think it would help make us all better players. I am blown away by the number of folks contributing!

That would be killer!!! everyone can post soundclick versions. That would also be a great place to test out recording techniques, and get some advice. These all sound great!!!!

Another thing that I really like are some of the drum jams from HC. It is killer to see what different players do with the same beat.

My vote for best "stand alone" tone is Chubtone. When I was watching the videos of "J-Luge" (that's my pet name for him)editing this thing, Chub's part was one that was solo'd and I thought "Holy Crap, that is a great tone!!". Unfortunately, that is a great example of a tone that sounds stellar by itself, but gets a little lost in the mix. I don't mean any offense by that Chub, and I wouldn't have brought it up if you hadn't asked about it. In a recording session for your cd that you should be doing :gethim: , it could easily be post eq'd to stand out more and it could sound in the mix very similar to what it sounds like by itself - like I said, it's an awesome tone; best one on there, imo. I just see an opportunity here for us all to learn a little bit, that's all.

Mark,
My CD is done man. It's been done for 6 months but I haven't put the artwork together to "release" it. I've been trying to do it myself and failing and lagging on it. I should try and find someone to help me.

Your post is exactly what I'm looking for. I was also laying in bed last night wondering if there were 26 other guitarists that played on that thinking "everyone else is loud enough but I should be louder". :D And I'm wondering if the woofiness of the low strings when I'm muffling send the track level up high but makes it get lost in the mix. You said lost in the mix but James said my level is the same as other guys so that tells me I need to learn to EQ better to get something to sit right. Also my monitors might make it goofy since they're what I mixed on and they may have a frequency present that better quality ones don't and I mix for these?

Did you listen to my solo at the Soundclick link I posted?

https://www.soundclick.com/util/getplaye ... 82798&q=hi

In that it doesn't seem to get as lost but still doesn't jump out. When you listen to my link, what should I do differently? Thanks to Mark or anyone else in advance!

1st off, that sounds frickin killer! Now, to me, it just sounds louder with a little 3K added in your mix compared to the mass solo version. I think the tone on teh mass solo version is better - :aww: I'm not a fan of 3K...
But I think you are right when you stated that teh low end on your track (which gets lost in a mix) is making your overall level on a meter show hot. I wouldn't change much of what you're doing, I think it sounds awesome. Between you and 70strathead (?), you guys have got that tone dialed!!!!!

first off you two crush as i knew you would...add ant in this mix, write some songs and push each other to extremely blaze on each one and i'll buy NOW NOW. i can already see it---you 3 posing like charlie's angels for the cover :D

next, curt you have a lot of low end happening between 250-100hz when you play your A and E strings, which will throw off your mix even if you compress, unless you multiband compress, and only judiciously within that frequency window but many times affordable MBC's affect the overall sound a little adversely....plastic coating and easily loose dynamics.
the other thing that causes that is proximity effect and easily fixed by placement.

Pretty cool

Everyone needs to work on their vibrato.

yes! i will always be the first to admit my vibrato is W E A K!
most of these solos are like pressing your thumb on a record player!
:rawk:         :hys: :hys:

here's the million dollar question:

James, who would you pick out of this list as THE guy to play THE solo on this song?

don't back down...you had to at least think about it....

Im finally now relaxing and having a better listen at all these solo's, i love Curts tone and note choices and Kaleiwahea , dude you landed on a couple beautiful major 3rd's adding that hip Dom 7th vibe on the end of those clever liquidy lines..really great/swingin phrasing by both of you. There is some really nice ideas out of all the players really ...cant memorize all by the name Ultra ( i htink?) did the lynch thing pretty spot on and i like Daneyo's,Rufus leaking, Micks approach as well Jame's guitarist to end it. James thanks for doing this, u rock!

This was super fun to listen to. Wish I would have seen this thread in time to participate myself.

So many great players on here. Randy(rufus leaking) and Mark(billybogner) are consistently my favorite players on here. Not taking away from the many others but these to guys keep it real interesting, have great phrasing and have such flair a for the instrument. hats off!

JESUS!!!! I'm not even worthy of being on this forum  !! GREAT GREAT PLaying guys  !! I'm very impressed!! And James WOW FANTASTIC man!!

At last just this on my monitors on the good puter, everyone sounds great!

Ultron, you still have Lynch NAILED.

Good to see my boy Danyeo Joe Jonus bringing some heat.

Gibson Chad, great Satch stuff in there!

Muudrock, great to hear you play, you really opened hard with some tastey phrasing!

My boy Billy Bogner always brings the pain.

My Marshall strat influence Ant leveled the joint, Freaking rock star.

Randy always brings some great phrasing, very interesting within context as well.

Curt, you let Ant cut through better with YJMs   Awesome playing and cannot wait to score your cd!

Darren, awesome as well as you really captured the clip with your phrasing.

Nice to see Ed having some fun with the 80s throw-backs

Congrats to everyone, incredible jam

After listening a bunch of times my favorites tones are from Rufus and 70'sstrathead. I also dig Ultron's Lynch vibe. Dstroud, damm i don't know how you can shred with that tone, i know i'd suck on that sound :D

Damn! There is some sick playing and some killer talent on this board. Makes me glad I didn't have a chance to get a way to record a solo... at least I have an excuse!!!

Great job to all...

Ok, after listening a bunch of times my favorite tones and playing are from Chubtone. Curt, I love your swinging feel man. 70strathead blew me away; what else can I say? Ultron just has fantastic Lynch feel; beautiful note choice. Probably the fewest notes played, but damn I loved it. That's binging the pain!!
Those are my top three for sure; today anyways   Alot of great tone and playing in here for sure.

A big thank you to James for this!!! I'm sure it was alot of work.

Do you think it's a bad tone? Just curious - it's actually real easy for me to play with that tone, so I'm just curious to learn a little more of what you mean.

I know this is a bit off topic for this - but there's something about the cranked plexi/tubescreamer that feels like butter to me - I can't explain it and I freaked the 1st time I played it - it was just more comfortable than any other amp I'd ever played. Funny how we all have different things that work - that's why so many amp companies can survive - which is a good thing!

Great stuff from everybody.

I was not able to get anything together in time, :aww: as I was having some issues with my recording software.

So, when is Round 2??
