RIP Allan Holdsworth

I can't believe it. And that he was 70 years old.

He blew my minds when I first him in the early 80s. Allan was a pioneer and influenced so many greats as noted above including Vai and Van Halen.

There are few players that have really transcended the instrument, Allan is one of those. This is a big lose.

Huge influence, though I can't really play like him. That Tokyo video from '84 with the red Charvel...just kills me every time.

I'm sure this is old hat for most but if you have never seen this, give it about 5-10 minutes:

The best guitar player that ever lived. I had really hoped that he would make another record.
I think the video shows some of his best playing.

A true master for sure. A guy who made jaw-dropping guitar players drop their jaws. RIP.

i was dreading this day and knew it was inevitable. untouchable.

beyond sad when an incredible legendary player who blew your mind and influenced you so much passes away. started listening to him in 82 when i bought his velvet darkness album and just bought his against the clock best of cd last month

saw him coutless times live

felt the same when randy, srv, shawn lane and danny gatton died

Very sad news indeed. Allan was a huge influence to me and thousands of guitarist world wide. Huge loss. I had a bad feeling when I saw a few new releases on my Slacker service recently. I was hoping he had released them to grab some funds so I bought the newest on I-Tunes to support Allan.
Saw him on the "Road Games" tour at Yoshi's in Oakland, basically the same set as the Tokyo Dream video above. Never saw anyone play like that and I left there knowing i'd never be even a small percentage as good, but a truly awesome experience. RIP Allan.

I know the years have crept up on many a musician from my time, but I'm no less stunned to hear this sad news. RIP Allan, to say he was one of the finest is an understatement.

This was a surprise and a very sad one at that. While I haven't been someone who follows what he did, there was no question of his influence on many and what an incredible musician he was.

if you loved the man and his music donate to his memorial fund and bless his family like he probably wished he could have, and should have been able to if this world was fair and honored and compensated his ultimate musicianship like it should have:

I used to have that same red Holdsworth model Charvel, but modded with a Floyd and an H/S/S setup. I got to meet Allan and told him I regretted selling my Charvel and he said he regretted selling his also. I could see him kind of drift away for a second and then he shook his head and said "lovely guitar." :)

Very sad, he was an amazing musician. I never met him but a lot of the stories people have posted online have shown me that he was a great person as well.

I am saddened to hear that he passed with a lot of debt (much like many amazing musicians) but it appears the go fund me has been overwhelmingly successful to the point where they stopped accepting donations and requested people donate to charities in Allan's name going forward. A pity Allan never saw how many people were willing to give so much in his name.

Rest In Peace, Sir

Wonderful guy. Have some cool stories about him from working for Kiesel for a couple years. He was a legend and a gentlemen. Privileged to have known him. R.I.P.
